HDD cooling

What is the best HDD cooling that is quite even?

When I`ll pick up my Watercooling Kit I`ll also buy 2 36 GB Raptors and I know they get hot, so I'd like to keep them cool while quite.

Maybe a Zalman Heatpipe? or a Vantec casing?

Thanks..

Take a block of copper, 1 inch thick.

Drill a U-shaped water channel.

Add fittings.

MAke two of these for each HD, stick em on the top & bottom

enjoy.

oh well apart from that DIY thing, which is of course out of the question for me!!

:)

Just take a quiet 80mm or 120mm fan and rig it beside the drives. I can't speak for the Raptor but just a little air flow keeps my 3 WDs cool.

ive yet to understand the hdd heatpipe cooling design. the pipes just go from one side to the other. is it suppose to cool in the middle or is suppose to act like a heat spreader?

anyways from just looking at them id have to say the vantec or this from coolermaster...

Cool Drive 3

or if you need a fan controller with it...

but id just skip this stuff unless you have money to burn and go with MetalX's idea.

wait a minute, i think I vowed to kill myself if watercooling stopped being considered "DIY"

*bang*

if your going for a fan less set up, i dont know... (block of copper, or a couple water blocks togeather)

but yes a little air flow makes all the difference, i had my raid 0 set up in an antec case, two 120gigs in the cadge with the fan infront two w/o, the ones w/o where hot to the touch but ther others where cool...

in my gaming rig, i have my HDs fliped upside down (mainly to hide the molex) and they are at top, and botom of a fan so the air blows on them but for the most part between them, its keeping my hard drives cool and actualy lowerd my case temps

good luck

thanks guys for the suggestions! The two raptors get very hot so I might go with the Coolermaster HDD bay.

That heatpipe thing won't do shit without air moving over it. A drive bay cooler is a bit unnecessary too, unless you want it for looks. An 80mm fan or two blowing over the hard drives would be quite sufficient and may be better than some bay cooler.

I have 0 airflow over my hdd. It is right above my pump, right below my optical drives, and I have no idea how hot it is.... and frankly, I don't care. It has been operating just fine.

I guess that's one approach... Not a very good one in my book, I like to try to preserve my data though :D

All I have is a slow 80mm fan in my hard drive cage, it keeps my 2 7200rpm drives cold to the touch, including the circuitry on the bottom.

Same situation for me, just have an 80mm fan blowing accross the hd, which keeps it cool to the touch. It also provides my rad fan with air, so it's kind-of dual purpose :p

not to worry, i started watercooling yesterday, and i built my own freaking block. (now i finish the other two and rebuild the best one)

for hdd cooling: i have a 70mm fan sitting on my hdd propped up by some screws hooked over the edge so the fan doesn't slide, and it works great (hdd is about room temp now) so a little airflow is all you need.

well, just to appease you freaks.... :p

I just put my hand on the HDD. Yes, it is warm, but so is the floppy, the hdd cage, and the bars around it. I think that is giving it a wonderful heatsinking effect. The drive feels like it is right around 40-ish °C

alright I`ll pop an 80 mm on top..and I have decided to go for a single 74GB Raptor!

wOOt!

:D
