Just came across this article this afternoon....it kinda pissed me off as I've been spending the past 3 days reading all sorts of nVidia 7900 reviews and *ALMOST* convinced myself to buy a pair of 7900 GT's....that is, until I read this article:

http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/ati_nvidia_hdcp_support/

If this is a re-posting, I apologize, but I'm certain there are more than a couple of you out there that are unaware of this issue......especially those of you researching monitors and thinking that an HDCP-ready LCD is all you'll need when Windows Vista is released.

Very disconcerting.

Enjoy.

that article was published in early february. in the article theres a quote from nvidia saying that inorder to be HDCP compliant you need a crypto chip on the card. i believe the 7900's have that chip.

In fact, NONE of the 7x00 series CARDS have said crypto chip. Neither do any of the ATI 1x00 series CARDS. I am emphasizing the CARDS part because although the cores of both series do support HDCP, no manufacturer to date has released a retail version of any card with the crypto chip to enable HDCP.

It does seem, however, that ATI will beat nVidia to the HDCP punch:

We're talking RETAIL cards here. The original linked FiringSquad article also states what you just said....if memory serves me, they did it for the GeForce 6x00 series.....but the point still remains that no such option is available to the retail market to date.

And that blows.

Don't worry about HDCP-enabled, it's just a feature that will cripple your experience, not make it better.

Don't buy into the lie that you need HDCP to view High-Definition content.

Boycott HDCP!

HDCP is too cool for school.
I'm so glad that the makers of Conroe brought us this as well. I'm looking foreward to my love-hate relaitonship with Intel.

Not even the slightest.

I will not even upgrade my monitor for a long while. I didn’t even buy my 7x00 cards to “prepare for Vista,” or any other component for that matter “, other than perhaps a keyboard or mouse.” DX10 being utilized before I upgrade for Vista, not a chance. I give Vista 2+ years before I even consider buying. It will just be a novelty when released. Oh yea, and that analogy they used to put the dilemma into perspective is retarded. Mpg and MHz comparisons? Very misleading. More like buying an Stretch hummer and realizing it is just a limousine. Either way it is a luxury.

i dont understand why every one is angry at the the 3rd party manufactors not coming out with the chip on their pcb, from what i understand the commity that is standardizing the format chnage sit every toher day, that is why ati thought they had an compatible card with the x1800's
