I'm wondering how important having HDCP in an LCD is...Obviously you'd probably need it for playing Blu-Ray/HD-DVD's on your computer but is that it? Basically, I'm considering which of the following monitors to get:

(no HDCP) Chi-Mei 221D-NBC http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16824252008

(HDCP) Acer AL2216Wbd http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16824009094

I feel like I'd be sacrificing quality (esp. according to 'egg reviews) by going with the Acer just for the HDCP.

Thanks for the input

Also if your hooking up a PS3 to any display, if your using the HDMI port on the PS3, the display must be HDCP compliant or else you get a black screen. This has become common knowledge, but I have personally dealt with this prior to getting my new TV.

If your not a console gamer, and don't want to watch HDCP required HD content on your monitor, you will be fine.

On a second note, you can use the 360 on any display, HDCP compliant or not, but I can not guarantee that this will hold true when the Elite comes out with its HDMI port.

HDCP, is really not important. Really, but unfortunately, the companies we give all our hard earned money to don't trust us and want us to think that HDCP is important for our "protection." Where have you heard that one before?

I read an article in a magazine at the doctor's office that talked about how HDCP was going to be something you will to have in TVs and monitors, so that was something to watch out for. I could understand about the TV but wasn't sure about needing a monitor with HDCP.

Any thoughts on the Acer vs Chi Mei?

HDCP only matters if you are plugging in a device that wants HDCP. As mentioned, the PS3 is such a device. If your source doesn't care, then it doesn't matter. For computers they don't tend to care. The exception is that the protected media path in Vista requires HDCP. However, I've yet to run in to anything that uses that so it isn't a big deal. Games don't care, neither do normal apps.

yes, it is necessary for playback of any protected hi-def content. It is necessary in both the monitor/tv and the computer/hi-def device.
