HD7970 cf hickups

what the hell is it with amd? The 7970's in my system show so many hickups that it's not funny anymore.

- youtube videos sometimes fail to initialize, giving a white background with an exclamation mark (not sure how else to describe it)

- coming out of standby it will have fucked up anything with a graphical interface, showing massive artefacting or just refuse to show it all together.

- dirt 3 now also causes hard locks (just as anno2070)

- amd display driver still crashes and recovers from time to time

- any graphical application i try to run after the previous happened will cause a BSOD.


I made another topic about this a while back, I'm still having (pretty much) the same issues.

Besides disabling ULPS are there any other things that might help?
AMD's support seems to be convinced that my motherboard is at fault so i'm currently trying to convince some of my friends to let me use their rigs for testing.
 
What is your motherboard?

I though it was my motherboard to if you followm my thread here but the hardware is fine. I am starting to suspect that I could be the AMD drivers not playing well with the chipset drivers. But again this is something that AMD has to fix.
 
i'll add some to the list that i have noticed with my 7970

- if i wake the computer up from sleep with the monitor off it resarts the whole comp

- if I switch from tv to monitor with a shortcut in catalyst it will crash about 1 in 20 times requiring a restart

- in windows 7 the screen will screw up for about 1/5th of second by squishing everything to the bottom 1/3 of the screen

- in ubuntu if I turn the monitor off I can't turn it back on, it requires a restart

all of these stop happening if I swap the 7970 out with my 5870
 
Try this:
hardware devices and printers> my computer/properties> hardware tab > amd high definition audio device

disable. reboot.

of course don't disable this is you're dependent on audio from it. But yes, it seems to cause a variety of problems. I suspect this by itself is responsible for a lot of amd hate of late.
 
@viper: i have an old fashioned first gen core i7 on an x58 chipset (asus p6t deluxe v2).

@q1: there are 12 amd sound output devices there... the fuck?

That definitely sounds like a problem. I'd probably get rid of all of them.

The 12 AMD HDA Devices show up because each of the 6 outputs on your 7970s can also output audio. I remember I used to have problems on my 5850 when the HDA audio on it was enabled.

I had a lot of problems with waking up with the 12.4 beta drivers, the monitor would not come back on at all and I would have to hard reset. Thankfully the issue seems to be resolved with the 12.4 final release drivers. It was so bad I switched back to the RC drivers that came with my launch 7970s.
