My GTX285 dedicated PhysX card just arrived and will install later today. What program(s) would you recommend to test the setup after install?

PhysX FluidMark
Cryostatis PhysX Benchmark
Batman Demo benchmark with PhysX enabled
Darkest of days Demo, it has a PhysX benchmark
Warmonger(Full game) it is free
PhysX Fluids demo

Just curious . . . does running a GTX 285 for PhysX offer any benefits over, say, an 8800 GT?

I was led to believe that you needed at minimum a 9600gt to run PhysX well, but I haven't seen any benchmarks or data to say one way or the other about better cards and their effects. I just sold off my GTX 295s in favor of a 5970 + GTX 275 for PhysX instead of a 9600GT or similar assuming that eventually the need for more raw PhysX power will be there.

From what I've been able to gather, the 8800 does a decent job and the GTX 275 does even better. I've read "more" is better. Granted, we're not talking major improvements in game play, afterall, PhysX only adds subtleties to the game. But it also depends on who you are. I'm an OverKill kind of guy so the GTX 285 fits my profile.

LOL IM running HD 5970 and a 285 for Physics I can post some benches and we can compare.

Good man, I'll have the 275 in my machine by tomorrow afternoon so I'll run some stock benches when I get it together.

Sounds good to me,

Okay, my first attempt to enable PhysX was a bust. I used ATI 8.663.1_Beta 5, Nv's 195.62 and PhysX-mod-1.2. In fact, my system crashed and rebooted as I'm typing this on my workstation. Hey gerardfraser! What files are you using since I'm trying to duplicate your setup?

The same as you,but I have my 5970 hooked up DVI to HDMI to monitor and 285 DVI to DVI hooked up to same monitor.Windows 7 64 bit. When on desktop I right click on it ,pick screen resolutions and have the displays extended.I am using 285 as desktop one and 5970 desktop 2.

EDIT:physx patch should be installed in safe mode.If you can not get it I can tell you from start to finish what I did,but heres a guide made up by vjcsmoke that should help

For what it's worth, I had to go back to September's nVidia drivers to get PhysX to work, anything newer wouldn't go for me.

I also was never able to successfully apply the hotfix to the ATI drivers for Dirt 2. I doubt that effects anything though.

I was able to get PhysX running around 2 AM. I had some bios issues which was causing my system to crash. Heart felt thanks to you guys for your input. I'll post some benchmarks when I get a chance. Today's dedicated to #2 son and getting his apartment setup. Thanks again!!!

Hey cool stuff.I hate the moving thing, always pay someone to do it.I am just to old ,fat ,lazy ,skin dont fit and all that stuff.Love to see some benches soon.

This is intriguing. I had never thought to install an Nvidia card for PhysX only.

So, in my case, I'm running to HD4870's in x-fire, I have a 3rd PCI-e slot, would I install my 9800GTX in there and run the PhysX mod? Is the key this mod? I'm not really understanding how I might run the 9800GTX as just a PhysX card.

Would be great if someone could post instructions (or a link to) the fix that allows you to run an nVidia card for Physx with ATI as your primary. I know this was locked down by nV a while back, but also heard their was a workaround...

I've got an extra 8800 GT lying around and a third PCI-E slot. Would def like to try this.

LOL 5 post up guess you did not read,Post #10 I put a link on how to do that what you are asking.
Good luck with it.Also there a new patch for physx 1.2 just to let ya know that works with all 195.xx drivers from Nvidia

I tested 5850+ GTX285 for physx in batman, and 5850+ 8800GTS 512 and .... both were the same!

><

Well I tested 3x285 in batman and then tested 5970x285 they were not the same.
5970x285 was faster.

AS far as Physx cards anything above 8 series that can do physic works good. Are they all the same who knows ,but the point is it ATI and Nvidia can do physx, not all of us have cards that are 2 years old to test physx.
Also do you mind posting the benches.

Sorry, missed that. Looks straightforward enough.

One (most likely stupid) question...

Do you need to have the nV card hooked up to a monitor, or can it just run Physx from the board while your main display is attached to your ATI card(s)?

Nope - you shouldn't need to connect anything to your Nvidia card. The PhysX/ATI patch essentially just creates a fake 2nd monitor that is a mirror of your original one and it enables PhysX on it...hence you get it on your normal monitor. It's more complicated than that, but the gist is - the new monitor created isn't real.
Just plug in a DVI/HDMI/etc. into your ATI card and you're good to go. HDMI audio will still work fine, too.

how does your point relate to mine :(? I used the same gfx card + different physx cards =p you used different gfx cards but the same physx cards!

my point was that the 8800GTS 512 worked aswell as the GTX 285 for batman physx

Can you give me the link to the Batman and Darkest of days Benchmarks? Can't seem to find them. Thanks

Never mind. I believe the benchmark comes with the patch update. hmmm, I guess I should buy the game. LOL!

I got the 275 into my machine last night, but I've been taking care of my niece and haven't had time to run any benches. I'm hoping tomorrow afternoon I'll have some time, and then afterwards I can tear it all apart, drill out a screw and tap the hole again :(

Going to try and get my 8800 GTX running physx on my 5970 rig....I'll post some benches here later
