HD4870 fix for black screen, led errors.

Interesting, but the stock cooler already covers the VRM's I believe. I wonder what us guys with stock coolers are supposed to do.

additional fans over the back end of the card to keep it as cool as possible.
 
This is very unsettling news. It basically means that the 4870 cards have insufficient cooling and are not stable at default settings with their stock cooler. Sure, Furmark is more demanding on the GPU than games, but who's to say games that stress the GPU just as much as Furmark does won't come out in the future? It doesn't do any low-level trickery, overvolt the card or anything.. it just display a spinning, furry doughnut. That shouldn't cause the card to overheat and crash.

If I had a 4870 that wouldn't pass this very common and widely accepted stability test, I would keep RMAing it until I got a working card. It's simply unacceptable that an unmodified retail videocard should fail a basic stability test. Almost as bad as the recent Nvidia mobile GPU fiasco.

dnottis is using a water cooling setup, and the guy on that German site using a stock cooler never spun the fans up above 40% according to his posts. So the cooling is prolly adequate, if Ati's drivers were to spin the fans up a bit sooner imho. They are leaning too much towards quiet in this case. Then again, both Nv and Ati have always leaned too much towards quiet at the expense of higher temps, for my tastes.
 
Well that waterblock isn't a full cover so it leaves the VRMs much less adequately cooled than the stock one

That could help some, but that guys solution was a ramsink and cooling on the VRM itself, which is under the stock cooler. I question how much of a problem this is though with the stock cooler, as long as you crank the fan up.

Many 4870 owners have reported that Furmark crashes within a minute using the stock cooler. Most assumed it was a driver problem (which seems unlikely because it works fine on my 4850), but it looks like we have the answer now.

Maybe if the fan spun faster, this wouldn't happen. So much for ATI's talk about the fan spinning fast enough - maybe now they'll increase the default fan speeds in the next driver.
 
Agreed, once I turned the fans on my 4870 to 30%, the temps were a heck of alot better and it was still quiet as can be.
 
HD 4870 user here and for the record I've let Fur Mark run with Max Settings for an hour with the fan set at 38%. Don't remember if I tried it at stock fan settings. Anyway , max temps reached - hover between 89C-90C. My Rig has decent cooling, but nothing special. Also note that Fur Mark / Burn-in will stress your GPU like no game can including Crysis which is a close second.
 
Ah well my GPU died last night - so maybe the instability is a sign of faulty parts on the boards. RIP HIS 4870.
 
Sorry to hear your card died and hope you have better luck with the next one whatever it may be. Perhaps it was Death by Fur Mark.
 
I am running my 4850 with a GFXChilla and NO sinks on the ram or volt regulators. Temps are 34C idle and 44 max load. Not a single crash. The stock cooler got to 100C and crashed on me.
 
I seriously recommend slapping some sinks on the voltage regulators. They can get upwards of 90C running furmark on my x1800xl and that's with a fairly large aluminum heatsink on them + fan blowing cold air over the card.
