hd4850 Worth an update?

What’s the best graphic card an E-8400 @ 3.6ghz could run without “bottlenecking” the card.
Wondering if there would be a worthwhile upgrade before full build in about two years.

I don't believe it's really worth it to upgrade it now. My 4850 is still serving me well enough and I don't plan on replacing it until the 6xxx cards come out and/or the nvidia refresh. I'm gaming at 1600x1200.
 
I replaced my 4850 with a GTX 460 1GB, and I've been really happy. You get a solid %50-60 performance increase for about the same price as the original 4850.
 
Ditto on that. I picked up a GTX 460 Superclocked for $156 shipped and sold my 4850 on ebay for $55 shipped. It was a no brainer

you aren't going to be bottlenecked much at all. I am not sure why people over blow this so much but very few games actually need that great of a cpu. in terms of playability it really doesn't make that much difference past a certain point. it does affect crossfire somewhat but for most things its fine. if you need to you can drop another 4850 (yours is a P45 mb 8 by 8 if I recall). the 460 GTX is a nice card and will pretty well max most anything your playing. then again a 5770 would work fine as most (not as big of an upgrade though)

really why do you need to upgrade? at your resolution your 4850 should do most anything.
 
There are plenty of cards that will give you noticable performance improvement over the 4850 when paired with your system. Whether or not it's wroth it depends on what games you play and if you're happy with the current performance.
 
I've got a 4850 as well and I'm waiting for the 6XXX series. If you want to pull the trigger now then the 460 is the best bang for the buck. I figured since the 6XXX series is so close and it should handily beat the 460.

Biggest reason I am waiting is to get the best performance for a single card eyefinity setup. Since you can't do that with a single nVidia card and the 58XX series hasn't dropped in price it's best to wait a couple of months. For the record I have a P35 board and a Q9650 CPU.
 
460 if u want buy now, but at that res might as well wait for the new cards by the end of the year, that should cut prices at least
 
Im running a 4850 too and Im looking to move up as well. The 4850 will play everything Ive thrown at it so far but occasionally I have to turn settings down and that bugs me.

That being said, I think Ive decided to wait til the 6000 stuff gets here or til the 5000 cards start dropping in price. If a 5870 gets down to $300 or a 5850/GTX470 get down to $225, Ill buy one of those. If not, Ill wait to check out the 6000's.

If you dont want to wait, the GTX460 is the minimum that would be worth it.

For what it's worth, those prices can be found with increasing frequency in the For Sale forum.

To the OP, I had two 1GB HD4850's in Crossfire not too long ago and their performance was very similar to an HD5850 @ 1920x1200. So depending on the games you play, adding an extra card in Crossfire can be a great solution without spending too much money. But if you are determined to stick to a single card solution, or just looking to move away from your current card entirely, for whatever reason, the GTX 460 is a great solution. I would say to check out the For Sale forum, though, as great deals can be had there pretty often as well, if you are not averse to used items. ;)
