HD4850 low FPS

Hi,

I have got visiontek HD4850 about month ago. well it was running fine with ati's hotfix drivers ( which was 8.6 i think ). got 115xx 3dmark06 score at stock ( 625/993 ) settings.

now when newer 8.7 drivers came out, i upgraded to it, but it messed up everything,
when i benchmark at 730/1150 settings it scored only 10503 3dmark06 score!! which is even lower than previous score at stock settings!

I tried uninstalling drivers/ restored PC to previous state, used driver cleaners..etc etc..later I formatted my PC and installed vista x64 sp1, installed hotfix driver .
but now even with this driver it scores 10k mark! also same result with 8.7 drivers again.

it is giving only 24 FPS in GRID at 1280x1024 full details, previously it was giving 35-40 fps at this settings.
i donno wth happened with card....should I try drivers came in box?

My system specs are as below :

C2D E6300@ 3.01 GHz.
4 GB ballistix @ 840
vista x64 sp1
ASUS P5B Deluxe mobo.

You're not the only one getting poor game performance with an HD4800 series card.

I get about 11000 with my HD4850 and a 3 GHz C2D in 3DM06, which is normal, but in games I often get about 20 - 40 fps at 1280x1024. Personally I think it's the drivers.

I used to get 130-170 fps with everything maxed out now sometimes in games my frame rate will stay around 40. In some games the screen will go black and monitor will display "out of range signal". I'm using 8.6 hotfix drivers...the 8.7s's are pretty much completely unusable with this card. Most games won't even start with the 8.7s and the ones that do have bad artifacting. I'd advise people to stay away from these cards until the problems get fixed.

What games are these? Mass Effect, CoD4, Crysis, and AoC are running fine on my rig with the 8.7s.

hmm artifacting? sounds like a bad card not a driver.

i thought i may have gotten a bad card too but switching from the 8.7s to 8.6 made the artifacting go away. i'm running the fan at 40 percent and my temps are 40 idle and 55-60 load so it's not overheating. can someone who has farcry see if they get black screens? that's a strange problem cause it's only farcry that does that, other games i've played with the 8.6's have been fine. except for the frame rate thing of course.

I installed with 8.7 and it seems fine, 100+ average FPS with an opteron 165.

man those are some old 3d06 scores you guy's are getting is that normal? i thought 13k was about the norm.

8.7 works fine for me. Nudging 100fps in CoD4 with an old 4600 X2. Haven't benched it yet, but its been kicking out frame rates like crazy in my other games. FEAR shows average 100, max 230
It beats the bejeezus out of my old 7600gt thats for sure.

Tried the 8.8 betas...still getting black screens. The sound also gets messed up when the screen blacks out now. Ogl games run fine for some reason. I guess I'll wait until the 8.8 final version comes out and if ATI still doesn't have this problem fixed the card is going back and I'm switching over to nvidia.

Using 8.7 on my HD4850cf setup causes artifacting in some games, even at stock speeds. Do a clean install of the 8.6 or 8.6hotfix and the artifacts go away, at least for me. The only game I saw a performance increase with 8.7 was Crysis so I am back to using the 8.6hotfix.

any idea when the 8.8 final is going to be released? these cards and their drivers are plagued with problems it would seem.
