HD4770x2!

Time will tell if Somebody makes a HD4770x2 with a larger memory interface and provides the undetermined truth.
they will NOT make a 4770 with a larger memory interface. if they did it would no longer be a 4770. if it needs more bandwidth all a company would have to do is add faster memory.

It's already been done, man. It's called the 4850X2. If you make a 4770 with a 256-bit interface, congratulations, you just made a 4850. That's what you're not getting.

The HD4770 has a different GPU. 2 of them in Xfire are supposed to be about 20% better than a HD4890.

If I can score a little over 20,000 on 3dMark06 with a single Hd4890 I should be able to score about 24,000 on 3dMark06 with 2 HD4770 on crossfire.

Not only that but supposedly all the 3d eye candy is 20% better than the HD4890.

That makes the HD4770 potentially better than the HD4850.

That is still only in games that support CrossfireX. I had a great experience with dual-cards once I got over the ATI driver snafu that didn't allow you to run 2x 4850's... but there are still games when a single 4890 will outperform the two card solution. Always get the most powerful single GPU solution that you can afford... it's better than buying two lower end cards. I'd much rather spend $190-200 for a 4890 than $190-200 for 2 4770's.

And for the record, I can overclock my 4890 quite well to get a significant performance boost.

and I'm not sure what you're talking about in reference to 3d eye candy...

If you are referencing AA+AF, than there is no 20% gain over a 4890. Results with AA+AF enabled from THG show that the the results are a toss up with victories being split between the 4890 and the 4770's.

Wow, its actually competing with the HD4890 and GTX280. That's really surprising.
how would that be surprising at all?a single 4770 has the same number of ROPS, only 8 less TMUs and only 160 less Shaders than a 4890. it seems like a no brainer that 2 of them would compete with those cards.

Considering that these are susposed to be budget cards I highly doubt that we will see an X2 version. but it would be nice to see though!

yeah it will be called a 5870x2... the 4770 was a test bed card for the failed 40nm gpu's that couldnt pass the mustard needed for the new 5k series.. the manufactures had tons of issues with the 40nm gpu's for nvidia and ATI.. and instead of just throwing them away like nvidia did.. ATI decided to sell them as the 4770..

Worked out quite well from what I can see. People love these things.

yup i completely agree.. and it shows a glimpse of what to actually look for in the new 5k series.. anyone say 1.1-1.2ghz gpu overclocks? because thats what its starting to look like..

Well with the wimpy power wiring, and components on the 4770, and wimpy HS, people have overclocked it to 900+ core, so I imagine a binned GPU, with better power control and cooling could easily overclock to 1ghz+.

True, there were troubles getting the 40nm process and parts to perform as expected, but 4770s are failed 5k series GPUs? I haven't heard this. Are you sure the 4770 isn't mearly a tested architecture on an untested process? More like a test, a tick-tock if you will.

Sounds like FUD to me.

Bottom line is that ATI did an awesome thing in releasing the first 40nm GPU in an affordable flavor with the way the economy is right now.

Good job ATI.

oh i have a better idea, why not ask ati build a 4770 with all shaders enabled and a wide memory bus may be 512bits with DDR5 at 1200mhz? while at it lets just call it 5870 or better yet a dual gpu card 5870x2

Forget which rundown I read it in, but I believe that the 40nm process precludes the use of a bus higher than 128bit... besides the 512MB ram is it's real bottleneck, as the 2x 4770 crossfire setup only looses to the 4890 when playing games that cache tons of data.

Pure genius!

Price it at around $199 and it will be solid gold.

Bump for posterity and discussion.

It's still a great idea. Especially if the price is right.

LOL

I can't believe I actually posted in this thread! haha!

NecroThread :p

Honestly, I don't see it happening with the HD4770 now b/c the HD5000 Series is right around the corner. The more I look at the HD4770 scaling with modern games (and non-synthetic game benchmarks) it really would have been a good idea. Hind-sight is always 20/20, lol.

But if the next series comes out with a mid/high-end card, an X2 variant wouldn't be such a bad idea.

Honestly, judging from the many observations on this forum and many other sites, imo, Crossfire-X seems to scale slightly better than SLI does. Maybe not by much, but showing how the HD4770 scales in X-Fire-X, it really is a testament to how AMD/ATI has changed things up.

I remember when the X100 Series was out and how badly the scaling was, but the same could be said for the Series 6 as SLI drivers/software was very young. ;)

I am really starting to wonder about you. lol. why would anybody want to discuss much less buy a 4770x2 when ATIs 5000 series of cards will be out in a few weeks?

Agreed, a crossfired 4770 can't keep up to a single 4890 most of the time, and the 4890 cost $200 or even less nowadays.

Too bad ATI never built this.

Hopefully now ATI will reconsider the idea with a HD5770x2!!!

Rather than make a statement like that do us all a favor and post some information to support why you think I'm wrong?

From my experience GPUS that have beter RAM or a larger memory interface perform better.

What is your logic?

Because at 1000mhz base, 128 bit gddr5 has the same bandwidth as 256bit gddr3.

One is slower and wider, the other is faster and thinner, but at proper speeds, the net result is the same.

The memory on the 4770's is rated for 1000mhz so pretty much any of the different 4770's memory should be able to do 1000mhz easily.

Im just having a hard time (well failing miserably, been trying all day) to get rivatuner to work on my windows 7/cat 9.9 install, the driver max overclocks are retardedly slow for this card.

Flash your card to Asus TOP HD4770 BIOS and you will be in business with the Asus Smart Dr. Voltage tweak software.

Single HD4770 should be able to do 950/1050+ no problem with the Asus Top BIOS.
Has to be the Sapphire Red card to work right. Blue Sapphire HD4770 has problems.
