HD4770x2!

I really doubt it too.

The HD3850X2 and HD3870X2 were realistic.
So were the HD4850X2 and HD4870X2.

A HD4770X2 though? Both GPU's aren't really powerful enough to warrant the high price/performance ratio of an X2 card, imo.

now if they were to do a 4770x4 that'd be cool to see, doubtful if the chips would scale well but with the reduced heat output of the 4770 you could in theory stack 4 into a 2 slot design

a 4770x2 would be such a waste...why would you even bother? You could get a much better GPU for what price point it would be at.

I don't think it would be a waste.

Reasons:

1. Possible price under $200
2. At least 256 bit memory interface
3..Better power usage than HD4850x2
4. Low temps than HD4850

Key to this card would be having at least a 256 bit memory interface which would more than likely put this card above the HD4850x2 for performance.

well if it had a 256-bit bus then it wouldnt even be a 4770 in the first place.

considering the 4770 card is not much slower than a 4850 it would be a decent x2 card I would think. it would certainly need a little faster memory though to reach its full potential. 4000 gddr 5 would put it at the same bandwidth as the 4850/4850x2 so that could easily be done.

Looking at the TDP charts and the actual power draw charts for the HD 4770 its a fail when u factor that there is no clear winner between this and the HD 4850. It comsumes more power than the HD 4850 and its an even swap for performance. Game to game its a 1 - 5 fps lead over the HD 4850 and visa versa, there is no clear winner. AMD must be making this card to save money because so far I consider it a FAIL.

Oh, the above is relevant to an HD 4770x2 because the power draw would be much higher than an HD 4850x2 and the HD 4850 has more bandwidth which should make it better in Crossfire.

Where exactly did someone come to the conclusion that a 4770 draws more power than a 4850? I've NEVER heard that before.

the only FAIL here is you at reading reviews. first off it consumes much less power than the 4850 so I have no idea what chart you are looking at. next it wasnt made to be faster than the 4850 and thats why it is priced cheaper. at 100 bucks this card is great.

according to xbit the 4770 uses half the power of a 4850. http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/radeon-hd4770_5.html#sect0

according to techreport the 4770 uses 37 less watts less than 4850. http://techreport.com/articles.x/16820/11

according to anandtech it uses 42 watts less than 4850. http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3553&p=9

The 4770 512MB in Crossfire could be a very interesting value. They're $90 each, so that's $180 for a Crossfire setup that may equal the speed of a $245 4850X2 1GB.

Don't be scared away by the 128bit memory interface - it's GDDR5, so it's nearly as fast as GDDR3 256bit at the same clock speed and much cheaper to manufacture, which is what GDDR5 is all about.

I'm sure the 128 bit memory interface is the bottleneck. Go at least 256bit and this card will fly to a chilly paradise.

do some actual research before making comments like that.

Rather than make a statement like that do us all a favor and post some information to support why you think I'm wrong?

From my experience GPUS that have beter RAM or a larger memory interface perform better.

What is your logic?

GDDR5 memory can run at clocks much higher than GDDR3, effectively ~doubling bandwidth and thus making a 128-bit bus equal a 256-bit bus featuring GDDR3 RAM.

GDDR5 is the better RAM.

1600mhz ram on a 256bit bus is the same as 3200mhz on a 128bit. either way you end up with same amount of bandwidth. the current amount of bandwidth on the 4770 is enough for the level of card it is.

I didn't post anything about the GDDR5 not being a benefit to the 4770.

I did state that the 128bit memory interface can bottleneck the performance of a GPU.

good thing a 128bit memory interface won't bottleneck yo momma

very little difference on a card like the 4770. just look at the more powerful 4850/4870. the 4870 has nearly twice the bandwidth but when the cores are clocked the same the memory only gives less than 10percent differnce. you keep acting like the more you add the more you get and thats not true because of diminishing returns. the 4770 is not being held back not the 128bit bus.

So you estimate only a 10% performance decrease?

10% is something.

you really need to learn to pay attention. that less than 10% increase was from nearly doubling the bandwidth on a card that is already more powerful than a 4770. on a 4770 you could just oc the memory a bit and have virtually no bandwidth bottleneck whatsoever. the 4770 doesnt need a 256bit bus.

Yea cannondale06 is right on the money with this, as we transition to GDDR5 with current GPUs the actual bus size is getting less important as long as the memory is clocked high enough.
SonDa5 would have been right before the introduction of GDDR5 but it makes a negligible difference as it is now, the 4770 has plenty of bandwidth for it's power.

Will be interesting to see if ATI uses a 128bit on their new RADEON series VGA. I

Everything that I have read in the past or seen with GPUs goes in favor of larger than 128bit memory interface for greater performance.

new radeon series? what are you even talking about? if you are meaning the very high end then no they will stick to 256bit bus because they will need fast gddr5 and 128bit at that level.

Well according to whay you have said. 256bit isn't needed because of how efficient GDDR5 is.

Your are confusing.

no you just dont pay very good attention. the next high end ATI cards will certainly need gddr5 and 256bit to get the most out of them. the 4870 is the only card using 256bit and gddr5 it already helps some so for the next gen it will help even more. mid range cards like the 4770 will be fine with 128bit bus and gddr5. I promise I am trying to keep it real simple for you but you are still getting confused.

the 5k series will use 256bit gddr5 5ghz chips..

also the 4770 was basicly a test bed for the new 40nm chips to see what the actual performance difference is between the 55nm chips used in the 4850/4870.. and its proven to be better then the 4850/4870.. so thats a very good sign.. along with the lower wattage use.. this could be a good sign for ATI..

as for a 4770x2.. why the eff would they bother doing that with the new 5k series coming out in a couple months..

you are the only one confused in this thread. you take a comment out of context and try to apply it to everything. it would be like if I said 1 gb of ram is a waste on a 9500gt and then you turn around and say so we dont need 1gb ram on a gtx285.

lets try this again. on the high end cards 256bit bus and gddr5 will make up for 512bit bus and gddr3. on the midrange cards a 128bit bus and gddr5 will make up for a 256bit bus and gddr3.

I'm not twisting words.

To begin with I suggested that a HD4770x2 be made with a 256bit memory interface to allow for higher bandwidth from the poweful configuration. Then you jumped in and stated that it wasn't needed because you claim that 128bit would be better because of how good the GDDR5 is. I don't negate the fact that GDDR5 is better than GDDR3. I do think that a HD4770x2 would benefit from a larger memory interface like a 256bit size.

You insist that my logic is incorrect but when I apply it to more powerful RADEON VGA cards you state that a larger memory interface is needed. You contradict yourself while I'm consistent in my logic.

Again... You don't make sense.

everyone else gets it but you so where do you think the problem lies? sorry for any confusion but theres no point in explaining anything else because this will clearly go on forever.

Time will tell if Somebody makes a HD4770x2 with a larger memory interface and provides the undetermined truth.
