Which setup is faster, and by how much? I'm asking the question because I just bought an HD4890 and something came across about the HD4770 which is less than half the price of the HD4890. I don't regret my buy, but I just want to know by how much the xfire'd HD4770 does it beat my card?

That is a tough one to tackle. Overall its faster, by about 15-20% depending on the game, resolution and settings. Personally I rather have a single 4890 and not have to deal with micro-stuttering, CF Profile issues, and only having 512MB of memory vs the 1GB on the 4890. Many people will agree with me and there are plenty who will disagree.

4770 crossfire is up to 20% faster........ but you gotta remember they only have 512mb ram so it might chug a bit at high resolution with all the eye candy on, and crossfire has to scale well in that particular game.

I can tell you every time I have cheaped out and bought a card with less Video RAM that at some time after, I was sorry. No more. I try to buy the best card and ride it out until 2 generations of graphics cards before I buy again. (In other words, a technology upgrade for the chips, because they always have one "redo at a higher frequency". That way, at least for a while I get to enjoy top end performance, and have none of the headaches that can happen with the lack of RAM. Otherwise, you always end up being behind one generation, and never getting to fully enjoy kicking some butt with a high end card.

the 4770 crossfire will be faster especially at 1680x1050, however the advantage will slip away at 19x12, and be a loss at 25x16, where the vram difference is significant.

I would go with xfire 4770 if you game at 1680X1050 or lower. Once you turn up the eye candy and AA + AF at higher resolutions I'm positive the extra ram on the 4890 will be put to use.

Given the choice, I would rather purchase a single 4850X2 over a pair of HD4770 in Crossfire. Each HD4770 is what, 100 bucks? Maybe $110, depending on the model, but they all have 512 mb of ram. The 4850X2 2gb is like $249 with rebate from Newegg.

In the end I settled for a 4890 1gb since none of the X2 cards fit in my Shuttle P2 chassis. Definitely go for 1gb if you can though, especially if you're planning to play at higher resolutions with lots of AA/AF.

I am switching to ATI and have the exact same prob (I was thinking of either 4770 or 4850in CF or a 4890).. This thread had a lot of good useful info , thanks all that contributed.

Heres to hoping they get better looking coolers than the 1960s George Jetson ones right now...

(whoo hooo... 3yrs for me.....)

I dont know if its $200 worth. I tried a bunch of SLI/Crossfire combos and the nvidia ones were way easier to do. Also res needs to be taken into consideration I am thinking at 1920 X 1200 and above more mem is needed.
I went with a 1gig 4870 instead to not to have to deal with the Crossfire baloney.

right, i game at 1920x1200 on my 24inch wide screen.

my 9800gtx+ serves well on that rez with most games on 4x AA and 8x AF

going to the 4770's would be a marginal gain...and i try to skip generations when upgrading...

gf4 -> radeon x800 -> nvidia 7950 -> nvidia 9800gtx+

theres a few randoms in between but thats the gist of it...upgrading every other generation gives good gains from the new tech, and ya gotta buy a higher end card for bells n whistles, but not the top end nonsense :)

I rather have the 1GB video ram for future games at that resolution. If you are an nividia fan the GTX 275 is a great card as well!

but going from a 9800gtx+ (which was rebranded to a gts250 i believe) to a gtx275....isnt that MUCH of an upgrade between generations you know.....

Tough decision.

What if it were 2 HD4770s in Xfire with 1GB of GDDR5 on each HD4770?

I prefer the HD4770 in Xfire to a single HD4890.

Seems like the value for a Xfire MB.

yea, id want to wait for the 1gb version from xfx for the 4770....if the price of 2 is upwards of 250+.....it probably would benefit to get a single card solution.

512MB is not bad even at 1920x1200 as long as your not a big AA person. Unless the jaggies are a big distraction, I leave it off. If I do run AA, then it is only at 2X for newer games, higher for older games. Loving my HD4850 xfire setup.

jaggies are a huge distraction....makes me feel like im on a console... 4x aa and nothing less and 8x or 16x af if possible.......

does anyone else feel that jaggies, even at a rez of 1920x1200 make you feel like its a crappy console game...gotta have AA AF up cranked with everything else

well I love SLI (been uing SLI since 7600s) and have been using low end to mid cards since. I switched to a 24" last year and my 9600GTs struggled a bit at really high settings (with a 20" they sailed through everything)

Than I saw the reviews of the 4770s and almost got caught up in the marketing hype....I know they have DDR5 and all but I just cant help but be reminded of the 7600/8600GTs with the 128bit.

I am going with a pair of 4870s (first was free and second is $60 less than a 4990)

No more jaggies for me...
