HD38xx bios mod

well the difference is only clock speeds and amount/speed/type of ram...

the only reason flashing it with a 3870 bios would do anythign is if there is some sort of clock lock, which afaik there isnt (excpet for that 860mhz bug or w/e the speed is).

makes more sense just to OC it to 3870+ speeds
 
It would give the card more voltage which would allow you to take the core to higher speeds
 
The memory timings / voltage could be completely different between GDDR3 and GDDR4. I don't know for sure, but if I were you I'd find out for sure before potentially frying your new card.
 
i just bought one from newegg. should be here on thursday. anyone have an idea what kind of performance hit, having gddr3 instead of gddr4 on this card, i will see?
 
Different PCB on the 3850 and 3870, so don't count on getting more voltage just with a BIOS flash.

(lol I'd thing upping vcore on the AGP variant might spell disaster fwiw)

And aren't the 3850's ram timings tighter ? I do believe that it has been mentioned once or twice on teh intarw3b... so maybe with a 3870's relaxed, one could achieve higher memory speeds, but at the cost of sloppier memory timing.
 
I have a powercolor 3870 w/ gddr3 -- runs like ass for me.

What are its clocks? And how does it OC?

3870's usually ship with gddr4, right? Except for a few manufacturers that ship cards like yours I'm assuming. Teh Google finds far more ggdr4 3870's than ddr3 and gddr3's.
