HD Warranties

Yeah, that's normal. Don't buy OEM or white box HD's for your machine if you want a warrantee.
 
actually, if you buy an OEM WD HD, you can still RMA it just like it was non OEM. that's one of the main reasons I buy WD. heck even if the WD drive came out of a compaq or something you can RMA it, WD RMA department rocks. 3 years is enough of a warranty period for me because of how well WD supports it. if a drive stops working, I don't care where it came from, so long as it wasn't reported stolen or somesuch, they will let you RMA it. it's one of the main reasons I buy WD exclusively.

WD doesn't do 3 years anymore, its 1 year all around now.

That’s not entirely true at all.

The Raptor series comes with a 5-year warrantee
The High Performance EIDE SE series is a 3-year warrantee
The Ultra ATA series come with a 1-year warrantee that for $15 can be upgraded to 3 years.

Right from their website. Like most things on the web, it's only a "Google" away ;)

I was referring to his comment between OEM and retail drives, which carry the 1 year warranty. Its aready been stated that raptors have the 5 year ( I don't even think raptor when I type WD, its a class of its own). Notice how I didn't quote that post in my reply. I've also stated before about the upgrade option that WD is coping from maxtor.

besides you missed the point of my post ENTIRELY. about how they don't jerk you around at all nomatter where it came from they warrant it and don't hassle you.

It's been 2-3 years since I was authorized Compaq Service, but this wasn't the case when I was. Nor is it the case with WD hard disks provided to Apple Computer, whom I was also a certified technician for (still am, but you have to work for an Apple Authorized Service Center to be fully authorized; I no longer do), nor is it the case with Dell, as I'm responsible for maintaining several hundred of them and know the drill. I wouldn't take it as gospel that all OEM WD drives can be warrantied through Western Digital.

As for my understanding for WD, all retail drives now carry a one-year warranty with a purchasable upgrade option to three, similar to Maxtor. If you buy OEM drives online from ZipZoomFly or the `Egg, warranties go by their listing (1 year retail, 1 year or 3 year OEM depening on model and specs, or five year for the Raptors).

I'm really not liking how Seagate is handling this. I was looking into two 160GB or 200GB SATA 7200.7 or 7200.8 drives for my next upgrade; now I'm going to seriously reconsider. I've had excellent luck with Western Dig; I may stick with them.

Ive dealt with WD drives professionally for more then 5 years, Ive RMA'd a few scattered through the years. and ive always RMA'd them over the web. nomatter where they came from, what they came out of, if it was less then 3 years from mfr date on them, WD said they were under warranty on their site and honored it.

Just a week ago I checked and sure enough the 20GB I have in this box which came out of a compaq system was under the warranty from them directly until the beginning of last month. I am not that great with times but weren't 20GB drives the big drives being manufactured in mass quantities 3 years ago? ^^; I would open my box to see its mfr date to double check but im sure that its date corresponded with 3 years from the mfr date...

That’s the type of service policy that has kept me a WD fan for a very long time.

I recently pulled apart a 7-month-old Compaq with a frozen hard drive made by Maxtor. Maxtor wanted nothing to do with an “OEM” drive, period. HP on the other hand cross shipped a new drive (2nd day) with no quibble and went so far as to replace the system disks which the customer had not bothered to “make” yet. I’m not an HP dealer but they even paid labor back to the customer.

If memory serves 2.5 to 3 years ago sound right on that 20 gig. Of course back then 3 years was their standard warrantee, OEM or not.
 
So in order to get the Seagate warranty, do you have to buy the "Retail" box instead of OEM? Or do you get a warranty on the OEM version if you get it from one of their "approved retailers" listed on their website?
 
Well i just checked a drive that i bought late last year and it was OEM


warranty does not expire till oct 2009 ..

I don't know how far I can trust theInq but you should check your drives. I'm pretty sure they're still under warranty
