I currently have a WD Caviar 120GB HD EIDE, Im looking too purchase a 500GB storage HD.

I want to use the New HD as a Storage unit, but If I can connect a SATA Drive, then I would rather purchase that seeing as how I can upgrade my PC and keep the HD

my Mobo is ABIT IC7MAX3 and I see in the specs it has sata port, but My question is do I connect the new drive to an sata port, or do I connect it on the middle slot of the IDE ribbon? Just curious as this is my first venture into multiple hardrives, and I dont want to buy another IDE drive only to regret the purchase later on

Also, I dont know much about Raid partitioning or any of that, so anything with a simple setup and decent transfer times will suffice

Thanks ahead of time

Based on what you've said the solution is quite simple:
Keep your current HD for your OS, apps, and whatever. Buy the new drive, make sure it's SATA and not IDE (also make sure that you have/buy a SATA cable with it as OEM drives won't come with one). Install the drive. Boot up, open up windows disk management and initialize/format the drive. End of story, you now have two drives working. You can't RAID between drive types (IDE vs SATA) or different drive sizes.
