My 80 gig Western Digital SATA drive is being a bastard. It accesses files very slowly and sometimes not at all.. It used to work fine but now it's just being slow.. I've tried the hard drive tools in Win XP with no luck so I was wondering if there are any other disk repairing programs out there that I could try before I call it trashed..

Also this drive is practically brand new but it's been through UPS twice (once to ship it to me, once to ship home from college) and it worked fine after that, it just kinda started acting up like 2 weeks later.

Anybody?? I did a google search but came up empty handed.. Just hoping I can repair this drive cuz it's really no more than 2 months old

I used Western Digital's Lifeguard Diagnostics tool.. Ran an extended test and came up with this -

Test Option: EXTENDED TEST
Model Number: WDC WD800JD-75JNA0
Serial Number: WD-WMAM93953323
Firmware Number: 500.C150
Drive Type: IDE
Capacity: 80.00 GB
SMART Status: FAIL
Test Result: PASS
Test Time: 17:52:53, May 29, 2005

Not sure why it says IDE for the drive type, it is SATA. I also ran the quick test and it failed that one with these results -

Test Option: QUICK TEST
Model Number: WDC WD800JD-75JNA0
Serial Number: WD-WMAM93953323
Firmware Number: 500.C150
Drive Type: IDE
Capacity: 80.00 GB
SMART Status: FAIL
Test Result: FAIL
Test Error Code: 06-Quick Test on drive 3 did not complete! Status code = 04 (Unknown failed test element), Failure Checkpoint = 64 (SMART Attribute Test) SMART self-test did not complete on drive 3!
Test Time: 17:14:06, May 29, 2005

Any suggestions? Or just call it a day and send it off to WD?

The drive should consistently pass all of the tests from its own manufacturer, with no exceptions. The very reason the makers have those tests is to quickly and fairly determine if a drive is bad or not when a user begins to experience hard drive problems. Proceed to RMA. If you've got access to a credit card, you can use advance replacement and you'll have your new drive in no time.

Well I guess miracles do happen cuz for some reason last night the HD stopped being slow and unresponsive, I was able to move all my files off of it last night, but I'm still going to call WD about a replacement cuz I don't trust it now..

Throw it across the room before you send it back. It's remarkably therapeutic....

:p

It probably has undiagnosed bad sectors as well... and if you don't RMA it, format it. I would suggest on RMAing it, though. When SMART says "fail" you can expect more problems later.

When I have an HD problem that I for certain is an hd problem, yet it still passes dell's, Wd's or whoevers test, I will take an old HD magnet, put it on the drive then test it, I get error codes that they accept enough for an RMA.
