I want to be able to use my computer that is hooked to my projector as my tivo if you will. Is there a card out there that will accept an HD signal besides over the air? i want to be able to use my cable box into my computer to watch and record hd tv. Is this possible? is there some sort of restrictions from the cable company? doesn't seem there would be since you can use a tivo. thanks for any help

From what I understand there is a restriction to prevent ripping HD content, even though you can rip tivo movies via a usb port on the box when conencted to a PC.

i don't even care about being able to record hd content i just want to be able to watch it through my computer if i can. it seems if you can use a tivo with your cable companies box then there should be a way to do it with a computer right? the tivo is pretty much a computer anyway.

Yeah... with a lot of proprietary parts/software.

A Tivo is a closed system so there exists the possibility of adding things like HD content and CableCARD support to them because the manufacture has control over how it all works.

With a PC they (Hollywood) don't have that same amount of control so they want to force broken DRM control schemes on PCs for the "privilege" of view real HD content.... and then they whine and complain that no one really wants HD content cause adoption rate for it so damn low.

Anyways it might be worth looking into getting an HD Homerun: http://www.htpcnews.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=24437
