all of a sudden my 2nd hard drive D: is in RAW format and I cant access it anymore! Its the drive I use to save ALL my downloads, granted SOME have been backed up, theres at least 40 gigs of stuff thats gone down the drain.

now, the computer still knows what drive it is and all, so i dont think the disk has gone bad, so what else could have caused it to go back to RAW format rather than the Win XP Pro format (NTFsomething)?? there has only been two things i've done between the time it was fine until now.

1. mess with the time/date to go back to Jan but only for a minute.
2. adjust RAM timings on BIOS
3. adjust CPU voltage -.025 for benchmarking purposes.

would these be any reason for it to do that?

now I cant use Norton Dirk Doctor because it doesnt recognize the partition, and everytime i try to access it it says its not formatted.
 
a virus could be responsible for the chaos
or your drive could have indeed suffered a physical failure in the exact location of the File Allocation Table.

I would run the manufacturers diagnostics on the drive to make sure that it isn't damaged in any way.

I'm not sure how to recover partition information other than maybe an un-delete utility to try and recover it. Possibly a thorough scan disk?

i just noticed someone else had posted a thread recently with the same exact problem, so i think its a new virus out? i use AVG with the latest updates and it couldnt detect a thing...
 
You've checked this in XP's disk managment, I'm guessing. And it says that D is Raw and Healthy? Does it at least say Healthy?

Since the drive is still seen , then you've checked the drive for errors to, no?

And I see you've run an AV scan, did that log give you number of files scanned?


Out of pure curiosity, why did you change the date back to Jan, in bios? ;)

I have to agree with that.
But I guess what I was getting at is: even the free version would have created a log for Number of files scanned. And if it did so, then how could the drive be Raw? Would the AV scanner produce any number from a raw drive?

Curious.

well the BIOS detected my HD and showed the proper drive specs and space and i checked windows properties of the drive and it showed that the drive was back at 60GB free space but in RAW mode. i couldnt click on the drive and go through it because it said it wasnt formatted.

so i just decided to use partitionmagic and reformat it to NTFS and start new. I'm currently on a trail version of AVG and it didnt detect anything. I'd go back to Norton AV Pro, but it didnt detect at least 2 or 3 virii that AVG detected.

you guys should update JUST IN CASE ;)

and about messing with the date... uhmm.. its cuz... uhm.. my dog ate... . .something. :p

I like AVG better then Norton too. Also, Norton not groovy with SP2 yet, or not that I've heard. I would rather keep SP2 and AVG compo.
