HD Prices dropping?

I've noticed in the past month that HD prices have been dropping. I'm pretty sure I'm right but I wouldnt mind some confirmation. I know that the large 500GB drives should be coming out soon (Hitatchi first, then everyone else). It sucks coz I just got a bunch of money to spend on my new fileserver... and now I'm going to wait 'til drive prices bottom out for the time being.
 
Well, be thankful for cutthroat competition. A frenzy of new releases is upon us, as the industry stalled at 80GB platters and 8MB buffers for a LONG time - for about a year. Maxtor cracked the mold with the MaxLine III, and now we have a torrent of next generation drives seeking to raise the bar on capacity, performance, or both. However, the makers will need to regroup again after getting their drives of 125-133GB platters in the channel, along with moving to the faster SATA interfaces, and for some models, bigger buffers. I'd expect things to calm down by holiday this year.

This effect that you describe is already well in motion though - you can get a 250GB SATA Hitachi 7K250 for $123.50 on ZZF right now - in the past, flagship SATA drives were well over $130 new. The T7K250 is not far behind at $126. Impressive performance and what is still a large (though no longer flagship) capacity for less than 50 cents a GB was unheard of six months ago. Like everything else in this business, the new drives down the price of the old.
 
Yea, I'm tempted to wait for 7200.9s this fall (I figure Aug-Sept). Its nice to see the stagnant market move again. I've talked about it here before, but it felt like the HD market just stalled for a year. No larger capacity platters, just the migration from IDE to SATA. Its nice to see things moving again. Hopefully perpendicular recording makes it a more interesting year in 2006.
