HD playback

I was wondering what programs your guys use for HD video playback. I mostly have .mkvs and they usually play ok using either VLC or quicktime with perian. However on 1080 films the video sometimes will stop and the audio will keep going, or when seeking it will crash the program entirely (both of them). During this type of playback the cpu usage basically maxes out, could that have something to do with it. is this cpu usage because it doesnt have a "real" graphics card
Its a macbook 2.16, 2GB, driving a 26'' 1920x1200 via VGA as extended desktop

its touch and go. I think the resolution is more critical to performance than size. And like i said, its just barely able to do it. Its almost like once its going dont touch it or else . . . . crash

Have you tried a codec pack like K-lite? Or is that a windows only pack?

i believe that k-lite is windows only.

They are primarily HTPC frontend applications, but Plex can be run in a window just like a normal player.

Uninstall VLC and never look at it again.

There is nothing faster for playing back HD video on a Mac at the moment. Unfortunately, no matter what player you use, there is no GPU acceleration in OS X until Snow Leopard.
