HD Playback Issue

I'm trying to play an HD video file, ~3.5gb @ 1920x1080, and playback is very choppy. When I try and skip ahead in the video the player freezes up and I'm forced to open up the Task Manager and quit the program.

I'm using Media Player Classic Home Cinema and I've downloaded the DivX Win 7 Tech Preview from the following website:
http://labs.divx.com/mkvwin7preview

I believe my computer's specs are in my signature, and they should be enough for this kind of HD playback I would assume. If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate them.

did you install ffdshow when you installed MPC-HC? There are both x32 and x64 versions available.

I installed ffdshow after installing MPC-HC.

ffdshow doesn't automatically come with MPC-HC, does it?

I'm going to uninstall everything and start fresh. Should I install ffdshow if MPC-HC asks me to, or download it from the website?

-----

Just uninstalled everything and downloaded both MPC-HC and ffdshow. Both 32-bit, since I only have a 32-bit OS right now. I'm getting about ~60% CPU usage and using ~1.85GB of memory. Something is wrong...

I downloaded it from the website. BUT....

I originally had ffdshow x32 installed and when I installed the x64 version it didn't uninstall the x32 version. Gave me all kinds of headaches until I manually uninstalled x32.

Yeah, and something is seriously wrong with that install. I'm only getting around 7% CPU with 4 other proggies running.

Maybe it's that tech preview you installed earlier?

I also uninstalled the Tech Preview. The only things I have installed are MPC-HC and ffdshow.

ok, crap, I gotta go soon, but are there any issues trying to play the same file/s using another media player?

Smoother playback in WMP, but when I try to skip ahead the whole window go out of focus and after about a minute or so an error message comes up saying my system is low on memory and to close other applications and try again.

So, in WMP it just crashes with that error message? Coupl'a quick questions:

1. How much free memory do you have in a normal situation?
2. What does the Windows Upgrade Advisor say about your system?
3. How many processes are running?
4. Exactly what type of file are you playing?

I ask #4 because many times a .ts file will fail to respond to FF/RW type commands.

I'll check back after I get home from band jam night, hope you find some answers between now and then.

1. physical memory in Standby is 1337mb out of 1409mb.
2. I've got all check marks. Doesn't look like any issues.
3. 44 Processes running currently. Only open programs are Firefox, Resource Monitor, and Windows Task Manager.
4. It's a WMV file. WVC1 Codec I believe.

An update:
I downloaded VLC and tried playing the file in that. Same playback as WMP, excellent, and I was able to fast forward beautifully. Some small artifacts when the video resumed but those went away after a second or two. Seems VLC is the superior video player.

This really isn't that complicated...

If your GPU supports hardware acceleration, ALL YOU NEED IS MPC-HC. Period.

BTW, just installing a codec like ffdshow doesn't mean MPC-HC will use it. You need to configure MPC-HC to use what you install. Regardless.. you don't need ffdshow. Only the latest builds have DXVA support anyway.

Really? I've always heard to stay away from codec packages.

Well, my video card is fairly new so I assume it supports hardware acceleration and MPC DOES NOT work. Also, from the screen shot above I think I enabled ffdshow to run in MPC and I was still getting problems.

Klite is a codec pack. CCCP isn't. The thing about it is is that it sets up MPC already. In your screenshots I already see things wrong with how you have it setup.

Ah, thank you. So do you suggest uninstalling ffdshow and MPC and installing CCCP?

They install both but already setup for you. So yes, remove all the codecs you have installed and just do CCCP.

I wonder what the last two letters stand for.

To address the OP's issue, sounds like you're either using an unstable version of MPC-HC (one thats known to have a memory leak) or your video drivers need updating.

Then you are doing something wrong. There is absolutely no reason why a new build of MPC-HC and a GTX260 won't accelerate HD video, none. Unless of course the video isn't H264.

Doesn't help that he's using VMR-9 and ffdshow.

This is like a 1 month old install of Win7.

I downloaded the latest version of MPC-HC and my video card drivers are up to date.

That site looks a little iffy, with all the Russian text and all. I downloaded MPC from the Sourceforge site:

http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net

That site isn't iffy.. its where the newest builds are. They just happen to be Russian.

I don't know how old the version is from MPC-HC, it may not even be setup properly by default. As long as H264/AVC (DXVA) is checked in "Internal Filters" and nothing is in "External Filters" you should be good to go. Obviously you have to be using EVR or EVR Custom Pres. All of this is the default setting in the recent builds on that site I linked to.

Here's what I've done so far.

Uninstalled MPC-HC
Uninstalled CCCP
Rebooted
Installed MPC-HC from Russian site (Latest Version from 2-18-2010)
Rebooted
Selected "EVR" in MPC Output options
Checked H264/AVC (DXVA)
Removed External Filters

Playback is very smooth, not choppy like it was before. When I try and fast forward, actually click and drag the progress bar, the video freezes and MPC crashes.

Fast-forwarding shouldn't be supported for DXVA, neither should clicking and dragging in the seek bar. Don't do either.

No, it should be.

No, it really shouldn't be. When you double the speed (of say 24fps content), you're asking your GPU to decode everything twice as fast without dropping frames, which it may or may not be able to handle. A similar issue arises when clicking and dragging in the seekbar, except that this time the player also has to constantly seek forward (to the next I frame) then back to the next position you choose, etc.

I just used the increase playback rate option on Sunshine which I have ripped to h264 1080 (1920x800) and playing back via DXVA. I played back at 2x and 4x and it was absolutely fine, no crashes or anything. The video and audio increased in rate in sync. There were dropped frames but the motion was smooth and accurate at increased rates.

I can also drag the progress slider back and forward and the video will play back from the lift off point immediately.

Op probably has some incorrect settings in mpc-hc. I am using the latest ongoing build and have the same GPU.

I have uploaded my mpc-hc.ini file for you to test, make sure your MPC is set to save all settings to an INI file and try this.

FWIW I use the latest AC3 filter to handle all audio instead of MPC's built in transform filters and have disabled the built in Audio Switcher too. I only use MPC's built in video filters. I use Haali's media splitter as well.

Don't use codec packs, they're not needed at all when you're using MPC-HC. You only need Haali Media Splitter if you watch multi audio/subtitled movies and AC3 filter with a gain of 8 to counter the naturally lower volume levels of AC3 and DTS tracks. The built in MPC normaliser feature in its Audio Switcher works but is prone to clipping and distortion so is not a suitable way to get the best quality sound. AC3 filter is.

My settings can be viewed using the ini file in your MPC-HC.

Perfect example why I fucking HATE mkv files...

I decided to bring back my old thread. This time I'm having audio playback issues, where the words don't match up with actor's lips.

I've got MPC-HC installed with CCCP and I get about half-way through a TV show and the audio goes all out of wack. A good 4 seconds after the video.

I don't know what the issue is here. It worked just fine up until about halfway through.

I would suggest that it would do the same exact thing if it were an MP4.

Is the sync drifting or is it correct until X time, after which it is no longer correct?

Well, if you'd like to rule out Matroska as the culprit, remux it into an MP4 with something like MP4Box and also remux it into MKV (just to rule out the possibility that there's some curious multiplexing issue). See if either work better/differently than the original.

Not that big a deal.

I use to have that issue too back in the day, no idea what eventually fixed it cause a lot of hardware and software has changed in the last year or so. I always thought it was the video file that was crappily encoded; one system they would play fine but on another they'd suck like a hooker in TJ for $5.

There's a new Haali update, check that out and see if it helps.

its correct until 31 minutes into the video.

Maybe the name of the file can give us a clue. Also doesn't help that you haven't supplied any detailed file info either. Did you encode it yourself? Where'd you get said file from, etc.

The name of the file?

breaking.bad.s03e03.720p.hdtv.x264.mkv

1.09 gb mkv file.

I've had so many problems with mkv files, either TV shows or movies. It's always the same thing, it works great for a while and then at a certain part in the video the audio lags behind the video, or vice versa.

I'm going to try uninstalling everything, and reinstalling a fresh copy of MPC-HC. Right now I have CCCP and MPC-HC installed. I tried downloading the DivX player but it just gives me this horrible static noise during the entire thing. WMP does the same thing as MPC-HC.
