A former friend of mine has a junk projector which is native 800x600. He claims its his ultimate hd experiece. Any thoughts???

Dont do it.

The standard HD resolutions used by HD material are 720p and 1080p.
Thats 1280x720 and 1920x1080 res so you are losing a lot of detail.
That projector is not an HD projector, its good enough for DVD or Standard Definition material.

You will cry if you try and use your PC on it.
Big is better but you need the resolution (and quality) as well.
If its old, it may not be very good quality, at least ask for a demonstration so you know what you are buying.
If he wont offer a demonstration, I'd look for a new friend that doesnt try and make a fast buck from his mates :)
Also check the cost of replacement bulbs and how long they will last you as they can be extortionately priced!

Also wrong aspect ratio, unless that can be corrected, to some degree, optically...

800x600 is better than standard definition or broadcast quality, but as others have already stated the aspect ratio is wrong and that resolution is far below HD standard.
