Can having the wrong jumper setting make a drive invisible to Windows?
The HD is an Hitachi 200g IDE drive. My OS is Win2kpro.
Would welcome your replies.
 
I have had a look in Device manager and it is shown after all. It is not showing in 'My Computer' though. I have a 12g Quantum with my OS on. Also a 5gig Quantum with a partition on. The identity letters are C, (12) D(partition) E(the same drive with what is left) and F which is a USB 250g disk. In device manager the new disk is shown but the partition isn't. In 'My Computer' the partition is shown but the new disk isn't. Is there anything I can do?
 
You just need to click or right click on the drive in Disk Management and initialize and then format the disk. Any leftover space on the other drives can be treated the same way if that's what your saying.
 
If I go into disk management I am given 4 unidentified icons and the 4 known ones. In the window which shows the 200g disk it says 'not allocated' and gives no drive letter. If I right click on this disc I don't get an option to initialize. Do you have to format a new disk? I didn't format the 250g USB drive and it is working ok.

You must format the disk and assign it a drive letter.
 
Is it supposed to take a long time? It's only up to 6% and has taken about 20min at least so far.

Depends on how big the drive is. My 320GB drives took over an hour to format NTFS.
 
Well format has finished now and everything is ok. It has taken nearly 2 hrs for FAT32. I am not very conversant with file structures but this should be all right for back up of my music files. Again many thanks for your help.
 
I thought it was the only option. I know that 2 of my discs are NTFS but I am not any wiser, at least I know what FAT means. As long as it works I am happy enough. What is the difference anyway? The knowledge should come in useful in the future.
 
Well that link proved useful. I will stick with the FAT at the moment but I will change it in any future installs or upgrades. Thanks anyway.
