I have a PC I built myself with 2 hard drives (only the master has an OS). Everything was working perfectly. I disconnected my 2nd HD and hooked up my friend's HD (with an OS) as my 2nd (to get files off it). It wouldn't read her HD so I disconnected it and put mine back. Now when I boot up with both my master/slave HDs, it doesn't recognize either one. It says something like "reboot and select proper boot up". If I disconnect my 2nd HD, it will boot up only the one master - but not when both are connected. It does read my 2nd HD when I have it connected via a USB external case.

I'm thinking since my friend's HD had an OS on it, it's trying to boot from the 2nd drive first and my 2nd drive doesn't have an OS. However, I can't go into the boot up setting because I can't get that far. It doesn't find any HDs when both are connected.

I ran chkdsk on my friend's HD (before putting it in mine) and it found/fixed problems.

Any ideas on how to reconfigure settings? I already tried new cables.

you could try going into the bios and change the boot order.

probably now it is: usb - cdrom - hdd

change it to cdrom - hdd - usb, or so

The bios doesn't recognize either one when they're both connected so my only options in the boot order is the dvd and cd rom. If I only hook up one, it recognizes it and boots up fine.

It sounds like they are PATA drives and the drive select jumper has been moved or lost.
Both drives are probably set to master.
 
I thought about the jumpers too. The problem is I never touched the jumpers on my drives to begin with. I had them set to master and slave. Before hooking up my friend's drive, they worked perfectly. When I reconnected my 2nd drive (set to slave) it should've recognized it. Could my friend's HD had screwed up the boot order?
