Hey guys, my stupid HD went crazy and got corrupted. I put another HD in the box w/ an OS to recover the data I needed, thankfully I got it all mostly. I reformatted the bad HD and installed WinXP SP2 on it, *but* the HD out of nowhere, started to TICK...like TICK, TICK, TICK...sometimes it'd do it for like 5min in a row, and obviously the pc would freeze up. WTF does that mean? Is the HD bad? I've had it for 1yr, and 10 months now. (When booting it up again, the Bios said the S.M.A.R.T. feature saw the HD as "BAD, please backup and replace", even though i just reformatted and installed a clean OS)

Western Digital 80GB HD IDE 7200 RPM 8MB CACHE.
 
I've had 2 WD drives do that, it means they are about to go out for good. Backup your data ASAP.
 
Went through 3 of those in a 72-hour period. Get your data off now. Of course, this is why I no longer use WD drives, and why I cringe every time someone talks about a Raptor Raid setup...

The ticking is most likely the heads bouncing off the platters. Definately the most common cause of HDD failure.

Buy a Seagate... 5 year warranty baby! At least, mine came with a 5 year warranty.
 
Do HDs lifespan are only 2yrs when you're a heavy user?

So you recommend that I buy a Seagate HD eh? gah...in a few min I'll take it out and check the serial #...by some luck hopefully it's still under warranty...but I won't have the receipt anywhere X_X
 
I won't buy another WD, I have a Seagate ticking away that I got 4 years ago.

My 1st WD HDD that started clicking was after I moved the computer to another room. I wasn't rough with it. The 2nd just started out of nowhere. Both were still under warranty so they expired before their time. I am currently using a Samsung Spinpoint as my OS drive, so far so good.
 
Damnit, I have the same harddrive and it is making a ticking noise when I am folding. Only when I am folding it will do this. Do you think I should replace my harddrive?
 
sadly yes. ticking/clicking noise may is indication that the drive is failing - replace - and yes go with seagate 5 year warranty and is designed for longer life.
jayjaya29 double check for file/ data corruption - back up the drive then see what happens with a drive check - right click your drive under computer click on property and then tools try the error-checking and defragment - see if there are any errors - Now in certain cases standard accessing may not show an error but something that hits the drive a lot (perhaps folding or thruput test) will show a weakness not normally detectable. Try some download test and see if they give you the same noise.
WD has diagnostic software on their website (at least they used to when I used to own WD's - back when the 40gb 7200 drives popped up - killed em both @ the same time under three days use in a raid array...) try that too.
 
as the 5 other people said, the wd's make that ticking noise if they're dead, or about to die.

i've had the same 2 wd hard drive for 2 years, going strong. one 80gb wd i've had for 3 years.


my seagate sata drive is louder than both the wd's combined, and is slower than them. i can't wait to get rid of it. other seagates i've had died within a few months and were always loud as crap.
 
Ah yes, the dreaded click of death...we meet again.
I dont even remember how many times ive run into this, but i believe the first time it happened was on an 8 gig maxtor drive. Point being, very common occurance, and your HDD is basically shot, even if it holds out for another 3 months (like mine did)...toss it asap....
