HD issue, BIOS sees WINDOWS dont...

OK, so I have a hard drive that has worked fine for quite some time. It has a lot of important data for me too. Well I have been using it w/ Windows XP for a very long time (6+ months). I never had an issue with it under windows XP tho. A few weeks ago I installed Windows Vista RC1. It installed great however when in Vista I could not see this particular harddrive no matter what I tried. I kinda gave up since It worked fine under XP so I thought nothing else but Vista issues.

Well today my Primary partion on my raid must have died, as windows was acting all funky and such. Its really no biggy if windows drops as I have all my stuff saved on 2 other drives in my PC that are only used for storage. So I decided to just reinstall since its been a while anyway.

Well I reinstalled windows XP and now guess what? Windows XP cant see that drive either... Now when the computer boots up it shows it in the BIOS as far as one of the connected SATA drives. I have it attached to the same controller that my Raid 0 SATA drives are attached too. All three drives show up, but when I boot into windows only the raid shows.

Now I tried going back into the windows installer to see if it would detect it there after reloading the SATA drivers but it doesnt.

I also went into CONTROL PANEL/ADMINISTRATION TOOLS/COMPUTER MANAGEMENT/STORAGE DEVICES and looked for it there, and it does not show up.

I also put it in a spare PC using a different SATA controller on that motherboard and again the BIOS picks it up, but windows doesnt...

Any idea what could cause thsi to happen?
 
Does it show up in the device manager? (right click "my computer"->propterties->Hardware->device manager
 
When I pull up "Silicon Image Sil 3114 Softraid 5 Controller Properties" in device manager it lists

Channel 0 Target 0

Channel 1 Target 0

Both being the 2 seagate drives that are currently in RAID. No other device is listed in the drop down. It is a SATA so it doesnt show under the IDE/ATA/ATAPI section.
 
my appologies. Actually its not hooked up to this PC right now. I will hook it up and update in a few :)
 
OK sorry for the delay. Yes it does show up in Device Manager. Heres what I see in Device Manager...

Neither of these drives are the one in question. The 1 w/ the C: drive is my RAID-0 and the other is an IDE drive of mine.

what I needed to do with my Promise controller was to create a "jbod array" for any single drive that I wanted to show up in windows. Is there data on this drive? do you have a second controller that is not in "raid" mode?

ps.: sidenote those images should have been either GIFs or PNGs, since they have lots of text and few colors with no gradients. JPG is better for photos.
 
yea, i just reinstalled windows and all i had was ms paint LAWL. sorry, but i was in a hurry.

looks like my raid died... 1 of the 2 seagates isnt detected any more :9

I am reinstalling windows again and i have disabled raid and set it to just reg sATA. I am reinstalling windows on teh drive that was part of the raid that is still good. once installed i will also hook up the one i am having trouble w/ as far as being detected and see how that goes.

yes, it was detected before, and its almost completely full w/ data. I will update soon as windows is already almost reinstalled.
 
U sir = Life saver. Hard drive is there, 100% functional, w/ all original data. I dont understand how it worked in the first place as it was always set to raid. Oh well, I dont care now as long as it works and IM not out a 320 GB hard drive.

I don't think I contributed much at all.. but I am happy that you have your stuff back. MsPaint (on my windows install) saves to png/ gif/ jpg and bmp natively.
