Hey all,

I've currently got a 120gig WD Caviar SE (8mb, 7200rpm) IDE HD in my rig (partitioned 30gig for boot, rest for storage) and was thinking of getting a new boot drive or something. Any options? Perhaps a 36gig Raptor for the boot, and possibly another 120gig WD in RAID 0?

Also, the drive I've got is an IDE drive, if I get another and put them in RAID 0, would the performance lack be far off if I had 2 S-ATA's in RAID 0? Thanks..

I don't know about your Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe motherboard. But many nForce2 motherboards have RAID only on their optional SATA controllers - the native IDE controller doesn't support RAID at all. And those boards have no RAID capabilities at all on their regular IDE ports - that would require either the addition of a third ATA controller chipset [which would drive the cost of a motherboard through the roof (since having three distinct ATA controllers integrated on a motherboard would require many more layers on the PCB)] or a RAID controller chip that supports both IDE and SATA (which is itself expensive to begin with, and would require the addition of additional IDE and SATA ports that would in turn require the use of expensive multi-layered PCBs).

Ah yes, you're right.. Well in that case, I could probably just end up getting a fast boot drive (ie. Raptor) and use my 120 IDE as storage. Possibly even get another 120 IDE as storage if I need it. ;)

Get a fast boot drive and another 120gig drive
pick up a couple of sata-ide adapters
I just bougth a couple made by highpoint that very good reviews
(should get them before the weekend) and then pop your two big drives
onto the SATA raid controller.

This is similar to what I'm doing on my box.
