HD dock vs. enclosure?

Anyone have any experience or suggestions especially about some specific models maybe? Originally I wanted an external 1tb HD so I can back things up from my PCs and the laptop, then I read about lots of failures and thought maybe best to just get an enclosure with a fan cooling the drive, while searching though I also saw these things called docks which look really convenient actually but I'm totally unsure whether it's a good idea to have an exposed internal drive just sitting there like that. I mean in terms of dust, heat, moving it around safely or other issues are docks ok? Somehow I think an external drive would be easier to just move from the desk to the coffee table where my laptop is sitting safely but maybe not?

Anyway, there's a lot of companies which I don't know making these types of devices so I'm looking for suggestions on which are the good quality products (docks or enclosures) to buy. I'm hoping to get something that supports at least a SATA 1TB drive and can use eSATA since that's an option for my main PC and I'll just use USB for the laptops (untill I finally replace those)

Any suggestions/opinions?

well one thing i can recommend is buying a drive by it self for full warranty.. enclosed combo drives usually only have 1 year warranty (from what ive seen)... let meknow if you find like a rubber outside with a nice quiet fan.. i guess my budget would be about 60$.. anything higher and i can prob just build it my self

I have been using these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817145027 and like them a lot. They dont have a fan, but they do usb and e-sata, AND can connect an IDE drive. I have not noticed any of my drives getting too warm. The only drawback to the docks (and its a minor one I think) is you have to store drives "open" unless you put them in a container of some sort while theyre not in use.

Yeah, I'm also now considering a bay thing in my PC case so I can hotswap drives, not sure where I'm supposed to keep the bare drives though. Also not sure what I'll do about backing up the laptop, gotta connect it to the PC somehow I guess but it's not really as important.

I personally love the Blacx Esata docking stations. Since owning a tower wasn't in the picture I use 2 of them to switch between my WDEACS drives and my laptop. The GP drives are cool to the touch so no worries about heat issues. When I get my norco they can be distributed to family machines for out of network backups.

Now I just need to find the moneys for another Blacx and two more Green Powers....

If your just working on a tower, the storage god was talking about a sledless hotswap bay... I would check that out.

yeah, I think I'll go with a hotswap bay just to keep clutter down to a minimum.
