This camera trick challenge on YouTube is pretty slick. This was shot in one take, has not been edited and does not use special effects of any kind. Kind of a forehead-smacker once you figure it out. Thanks to Derrick M. for the link.
 
Uh, two rooms? The wrapping paper leaning on the "mirror" gives it away. It is not "reflected" properly.
 
If it has a camera on the other side of the phone it could insert the recording from that camera in to the overall image and make the phone dissapear.
 
The "mirror" is a big HD monitor on its side running a prerecorded video that the guy choreographs his movements to. Pretty cool, even if his movements aren't perfectly timed.

I noticed that. When it pans to the left, the camera holders movement isn't quite in sync.
 
When he pans down to his feet, you can see that the feet aren't in their proper places.
 
Either way, it is pretty well done even if it is a marketing stunt. I think it at least keeps you thinking about the phone and its camera. Well done.

I see that now. I noticed it when he was doing the really quick pan down. The first slow pan I really couldn't tell.
 
The B on the wall in the reflection is also backwards (or it is backwards of what i should be as it is pointing in the correct direction). The coats aren't the same on the rack either.

At about 1:11 in the video you can see the letters in the "mirror"...look at the B. Also, look at the Samsung on the back of the camera when he gets close to the mirror. ;)
 
look at his fingers when he moves his hand in front of the camera and it disappears.
He is using his index finger and thumb, and then he is using his middle finger and thumb.
Probably using a flat fake camera as a prop and reverse palming it.

And it is 2 rooms with a hole in the wall.
 
I got the fingers mixed up, index and middle while holding the camera and then the ring finger when the camera disappears..
 
EASY, figured it out the moment he looked at the mirror.

There are two rooms. Note that when he turns at the end, that the camera POV and the actor in the "reflection" aren't turning at the same rate.

They used the same trick in the extended version of T2 when they were pulling the CPU out of Arnie's brain. Its at about 1:15 here: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x615wr_terminator-2-judgment-day-cpu-reset_shortfilms

The "mirror" is actually a hole looking into a mirrored set, Linda Hamilton's twin sister is in the "reflection", etc.
 
Why wouldn't I be able to figure that out? I've seen enough Quantum Leap in my life to know how it was "done" or whatever.
 
Yeah it's not a real mirror, the prop camera you see in the "reflection", the S characters are not mirrored on the prop.

The other popular theory on the youtube comments is that it's a TV playing back a movie that the camera man is synchronizing to. Not sure how realistic that is, but it seems like less work that duplicating a room!

How have I never seen that!?!?!?! I LOVE T2. Looks like I gotta go buy that DVD.
 
That's it...it has to be a large HD monitor that he's sync'ing movements to. Right before he pans down to his feet, he specifically says 'that might help...'. In the reflect, his left foot is in front of his right foot just by a bit. If it were a real reflection, it would reverse that and make the 'real' him have his right foot in front of his left. When he pans down...his left foot is just a bit in front of his right foot.

Also, before that, he puts his hand on the 'mirror' and his thumbs do not line up... It's possible that this is more a POV issue, however.
 
Im surprised no figured out exactly what they did, the theories on YT (334 posts) at the moment are pretty good but none of them are spot on ;)
 
Right off the beginning you see the persons reflection off of a reflective surface after he puts down the camera's box. His hair is combed, almost slicked back compared to later looking through the fake mirror.
 
got it. two rooms, two guys dressed alike, two similar looking women. Guy in "mirror"/other room's camera is off. Lettering on his phone not properly mirrored "S" not backwards, but "N" and "G" are???... also the G in samsung should be next to the lens, but it's not - they spelled the whole word backwards. The AB sign on wall not mirrored, just reversed. Coat rack is arranged differently. Girl's hair is draped over shoulders differently. Feet in diff places. Camera phone pointed in wrong direction to film it's reflection.

Still, very very clever. The lag could be explained by the camera image-stabilization maybe?
 
Duplicate room setups looking through a window not at a mirror, the "mirror" images aren't correct either.
 
Well heres a little part of the trick for you guys, notice how when he first makes the camera "disappear," the video feed captures the lens covered/passed over before any part of his hand even moves across the video frame. This is enough to tell me that the phone in his hands is not whats taking the video at all. Theres something else to this trick.

Also on the box of the camera, it clearly shows the SAMSUNG with the G next to the lens, and in the mirror its the S next to the lens. Weird eh? Must be mirror tricks / fake camera work of some sort.
