HD Camcorder as a Webcam?

I know pre-2009, most Camcorders (which weren't HD) could be used as Webcams. You simply plugged them into your computer with Firewire and your computer would read it as a webcam. You could then use it in Skype, XSplit, FMLE or whatever.

Nowadays, Firewire is no longer available. So what I am looking for is a NEW HD Camcorder that I can plug into my computer through USB 2.0/3.0 and then view the live video feed as a webcam like the older cameras. I have a friend who does this with a Canon 5D, but thats a $1600 camera and I cant afford that.

Anyone have any good options? If the camera has a good mic, that's even better.

I tried using an old Canon HV20 via firewire as a camcorder. And despite being HD and firewire, it would only work as a camcorder in SD mode, which looked aweful. So even if you can get a newer USB camera working, there may be driver limitations to consider.

Tip... most cameras will go into sleep mode if there is a tape in the unit. Removing the tape will allow to use as a camcorder without the unit going to sleep.

I would assume new HD Camcorders don't have tapes...

I'm taking about Digital Camcorders, like a Canon Vixia or a Sony Handycam.

Tough to give a recommendation without any actual scope to the question. How about starting over by explaining your goal, and what the (minimum) requirements are to consider as achieving that goal.

Edit: Knowing additional details helps further -- what you will want to broadcast, audio/video quality requirements, (anticipated) network throughput at both ends, etc.

I thought I explained my goals... an HD Camera I can use as a Webcam... plug it into my computer and have it show up as a DirectShow camera like a webcam. End of story, only requirement.
