HD 7970 Black Screen's when overclocking?

After a certain point... The card will just shut off and force me to hard-reset my system to get it working again.
This only seems to happen when the card consumes around 350w.
I know it's not PSU related.
 
please list your full system specs, including age of psu, case make & model as well as fans.

it seems like a heat issue initially to me which is why I asked for all this info. Can you try running a temp monitoring program to see what the idle climate is like then go play a game for 20 mins and see what happens? We need to eliminate one thing at a time.
 
It'll run games no problem...
OCCT gives it a very hard time.
1070 MHz and 1150mV is OCCT stable but anything higher than that the card will blackout.
It looks like at a hardware level the card will "trip" when it exceeds a certain wattage or amperage.
Would love to know if it can be disabled.
I have PowerPlay disabled via Afterburner (unofficial overclocking=2) and that seems to have taken me above the PT limit of +20%.
 
I've run into "graphics driver stopped responding" errors, but not hardlocks. Tahiti seems much more able to recover from bad overclocks than Cayman was.
 
Try to uninstall the driver and a clean reinstall then try to overclock again. CCC and afterburner dont agree sometimes from what Ive heard. Try maxing the OC in CCC without afterburner runing. Should be able to get 1125 mhz.

It doesn't look like a driver conflict...
More like a limitation.
 
I had an asus dc2 top 7950. Blacked above 1075mV, returned to the shop and ordered a sapphire 7950 oc, now 1200mV is the max, i can do 1220/1800, but anything above freeze. Max gpu temp 75, max vrm temp 78. I hope sbody find a way to get around this annoying limitation...
 
Mine goes black when it hits about 75c and hard locks the computer. When I'm pushing it to 1250mghz with 1275mv. If I kick the fan up to like 70% and keeps it under 75c it's fine.. Ordering a water block soon. Pretty sure I can hit 1300 on water. Or at least keep it at 1250 with out sounding like a jet plane. Mine will do the kick out driver failure when I try anything over 1300 before it even gets hot. Try running the Fan 100% and see if you get a black seen and watch your temps. If it doesn't black screen trun the fan back down and watch the temps and see if it does it at a certian temp. Mine always does it at 75c.
 
ASUS blacked out at 70 :D

Now im fcked with the sapphire, i tought its rock stable at 1200/1575 1200mV, but crysis 2 freezed my comp after 40 min. I tried lowering the vgpu to 1183mV but my comp rebooted after 15 sec...
