HD 7850 shadows bugging out, help?

Shadows are flickering in and out based on angle in every game I play. I've tried changing driver settings, game settings, reinstalling drivers... Only thing I havn't tried is changing drivers because I'm not sure the 12.2's support 78XX as the 12.3 say they add support for them.

Here's a video so you can understand what I mean by flickering in and out:

that's a STALKER bug for sure, shadows get weird in widescreen near the edges.

the rest i'm guessing is either a game or driver bug.

I think it's too consistent to be a game bug, it's fairly similar in every game I've tried that supports any kind of dynamic shadows: they either vanish at certain angles, or garble and warp at certain angles.

As far as drivers go, do I even have any options other than waiting on new ones? The 12.3's say they added support for HD 78XX cards - will 12.2's even work at all?

The STALKER one is a known issue. You can fix it with a console command / config tweak (might be "r2_sun_near", but I'm not sure).

I had that same issue in Fallout 3, though it was uncommon. I think this was on both an x1950pro and a 4850. (And by the way, I don't think those shadows are dynamic.)

It would be pretty surprising if this was not game specific, since shadowing implementations, AFAIK, are game specific. I don't think they're provided by the D3D API, let alone the drivers, so it would be difficult for the drivers to break them across the board. How many more cases have you seen? Between these three, I'd chalk it up to coincidence.

You can try the 12.4s, which are out now. Also, many TWIMTBP games use some form of dynamic shadows that don't work well on Radeon cards. I've had this problem all the way back to my 9600XT many years ago. I'm surprised that it's still persistent in modern games though. Back then, I'd just turn off dynamic shadows.

@LuminaryJanitor

I don't own many recent games, that's about all I've tried that has shadows that glitch, and if it's a coincidence that can't be fixed by drivers I might have to ditch this card for an NVIDIA.... You said it happened infrequently; Do you mean it would happen at certain spots in the game or that it would happen anywhere in game but rarely - because I can reproduce that pool table shadow glitch every time I load up the game.

@Medion

I'm not keen on beta drivers, but thanks for the suggestion.

Error on my part. When I installed the 12.2s from their website, the version reported as 12.3 via the CCC. They have a "new" 12.3 release as of 3/28. Are you using the 3/28 release?
