HD 6950 Problem... sorta.

This is just a story of some issues I found myself in the last couple days and hopefully tonight are resolved.

The last few days playing Skyrim, it would cause my computer to CTBSOD (Crash To BSOD). For a while I couldn't figure out what was up. Figured a horrible mod conflict.

Took me a bit to consider overheating. Why? I put 33 carefree hours into my character before modding. BSODs happened after some heavy modding.

Checked speedfan and had it log my temperatures while I was playing Skyrim, it was showing an idle temp of 50C. Yikes.

Highest it logged was 63C.

Google I go.

Read up in another forum about the 6950s increasing in temp with a second monitor plugged into them. Got me thinking, I have my TV in the DVI slot and duplicating my monitor so I can watch movies. No DVD player and my XBox just red ringed two days ago. :mad:

So figured what the snot, unplugged. Almost instantly my speedfan temps went from 50-53C idling, to its current temps right now at 35C idling. Suppose I'll turn my case fans back down now too.

Has anyone else experienced a similar situation?
 
50c is nothing for a GPU, 60c is ok even. When you get to 80c, start to worry and look for problems.
 
I played Skyrim for about 2 hours last night without a hitch. Plugged my TV back into the GPU and in about 20 minutes of gametime my computer BSOD.

Are the speedfan temps accurate? Is there a better or more reliable method that I can try out?

If you read that off of guru3d, in the original unlocking thread, then I wrote that. I found that more then one monitor doesnt allow the 6950 to idle very well, which especially sucks for 6950 crossfire eyefinity users ( like myself ), so the temps youre getting are higher then typical users, but still incredibly low compared to what temps the 6950 can take.

Can you tell us the settings you have your card at?
CORE CLOCK / Memory etc.

I had some frequent crashed on Dirt 3 eyefinity and nothing else when my memory was clocked too high.

The card is stock, I haven't overclocked it since the day I got it.

do the blue screens say "memory management 000x000" or something like that?
 
I don't know. I haven't set my BIOS to not restart on failures. Caught a file that ended with .sys. Another had PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA.

I'm thinking I'm gonna have to make my pc crash... lol
 
Your card runs hotter when 2 monitors plugged in because the clocks don't scale way down.
With 1 monitor, you're running 250/150
With 2, you're running 450/1250, which is normal. My 6950's did the same, as well as my 7970 right now. (I unplugged my other monitor right now since I've been doing some benches and don't want add extra stress)

In regards to crashing, test to see if it's only in Skyrim or all games?
