I have made a few post on here about building a new gaming rig.

I am having a dilemma about buying this card. I have been online reading review after review about the driver issues with this card.

First off I was wondering if any of the people on here running this card are having the crashes and bugs that comes with some of these cards, or has ATI fixed some of the issues with recent drivers?

I have always been a nvidia fan and really want to go for the ATI card for the obvious reasons, cost, speed, DX11, But dont want the headaches! who does?

Any feedback would be great with helping me determine what card to buy.

Second question. What card manufacture is the best? XFX or Sapphire?

From what I have researched Sapphire is the better of the 2.

It seems tho XFX has released a diffrent version of this card found here.

I have a HD5850... two of them

I love them and run 9.12HF drivers with Eyefinity with little to no issues... never crashes

XFX for so many reason... customer support, Warranty...

If you really love Nvidia... then you might look into Fermi(hit up google and research it)... not out yet, but it is the future for Nvidia (DX11, multi monitors... est)

That is a great card in the link... personally I recommend it if you are looking for a single GPU system

Performance per dollar I recommend the 5850, but once I went to Eyefinity I had to get another one :p

if your really worried about drivers on the 5870.. wait for the 10.2 drivers to come out which should be very soon since the 5830 is out now.. the 10.2 drivers will being the deciding factor in if they have fixed all the problems and actually implemented the features AMD/ATI has said would be added..
 
I am going with a 5870 now.I love my single sapphire 5850,but have just put it up 4 sell in the forum.I am thinking of going with the xfx card you provided the link for.My card has been rock solid.No issues of any kind.Very fast.
 
This card seems to be newer design wise, fan on top of cpu. but the exhaust ports are blocked.and it also does not say double warranty .

I wonder why the first card I posted does not have the Double Lifetime Manufacture Warranty?
 
I don't like the new XFX 5870. It'll blow hot air right into the case, and doesn't seem to defer any obvious benefits over the reference cooling.

AFAIK all XFX cards sold in the United States carry their Double Lifetime Warranty.


I'd go with Sapphire because I trust them to stick to reference PCBs and top-notch components. A 2-year warranty is more than enough for me.. though the Double Lifetime Warranty's main advantage is an Alexander Hamilton more when you resell the card.
 
Drivers do have a lot of issues. They won't install without certain cmd arguments and tricks, and starting with the last update, Windows can't turn off the monitor. None of the issues has been serious so far. You could wait for the new GeForce of course. The only issue I've had with Nvidia is with SLI.
 
i don't ever have any problems.my 5850 fired right up without a hitch. but anytime you have new hardware your going to have somethings to work out. i see the biggest problem seems to be on win7 systems.
 
I thought drivers were all sort of worked out now....well that was the impression I got.
 
I vote for a 5850 also. If you can overclock your cpu safely to 3.6 to 3.8ghz, only then I'd say 5870. A core i7-920 processor at stock pretty much maxes out a 5780 out as you don't see a lot of fps improvement with cpu scaling past stock. Whereas a A 5970 on the other hand produces considerably better fps the more you overclock your core i7-920 suggesting some cpu limitation. There's a nice scalability/what gpu is right for your gpu that SixtyWattMan has posted in a lot of various threads.
 
The 5850 is a really great card, no problems with anything at 1920*1080 with oodles of AA and AF thrown in and maxed settings except Crysis (which it can still run maxed very well, just without the oodles of AA/AF). I'd only jump for the 5870 at 2560*1600 and higher really, or with an Eyefinity setup. I'm baffled it's so close to the 5870 (about 10-15% away) with 160 less shaders, 125MHz lower clocks, lower temps/noise, and a $100 lower street price.

I've had no problems with the 5850 installation. I went from a GTS 250 with 18x.xx drivers to a 5770 with 9.12 hotfix to a 5850 with 9.12 vanilla on Win7 Pro x64 with minimal hitches through any of them (including the GTS 250). I only got a striped gray screen once from the desktop with the 5850, but that was a long time ago. None of the enlarged cursor problems either. Of course YMMV, drivers for both parties can be touchy with the right (wrong) hardware combination.
 
Installed a 5870 without a single hitch.

I had two gtx260's running in my system. Powered down - pulled them out - plugged in the Sapphire HD 5870 - powered on - installed 10.1 - NO ISSUES. No lockups, No Grey Screens, Nothing. Even wakes up from sleep - monitor is getting a black signal but it never freezes.


I also never removed my nvidia drivers before installing. Performance seems typical of benchmarks.
 
Get the XFX one from Tigerdirect/CincuitCity/CompUSA when Bing hits 15% again. Has been doing so off and on the last week or more, can pick it up for $340 after CB, free shipping and no tax unless FL and NY I think. Course you can also get the 5850 for $255.

Zero issues besides some minor inconveniences with the 10.1 asstastic drivers.

I'm have a Saphire 5870 and absolutely love it

on another note your post says here your using eyefinity and crossfire...has this been resolved???
I've been a bit uninformed on this lately since i've been so busy with work.
 
I have not had any driver stability issues with my 5870 that I ordered the minute it showed up on newegg.
 
I've had my 5870 since they were released. The only time I had any issues with drivers was when I installed two certain betas. The WQHL releases have been fine, and so have been the Hotfix releases.
 
No problems with 2 different 5870s since late December. Nvidia drivers have given me more headaches and random bluescreen/lockups than Ati.
 
Using Gigabyte 5870, very silent, compared to my earlier setup of pair of 280s, and much more effective. Getting more FPS in Age of Conan then on SLI 280s. The only game that has problems is StarTrek Online - had to switch of dynamic lighting, or game would crash during away team missions.

Though, when everything maxed up, and best quality AA/AF options are forced, then NFS:Shift was a bit joggy, but on 8aa 16af, anything but Crysis will run in 1920x1200 :)
 
ATI don't seem to have any more problems on average with new flagship hardware than nvidia, neither release perfect drivers straight away, it's just part and parcel of staying on the forefront of technology with these fast video cards and new features, sometimes there's bugs.

I've had some issues with my 5970 since launch but only with specific driver revisions, I'm running the 10.1 at the moment with no problems.

I am sure the Sapphire cards are a great card... I wouldn't discredit them for a minute... I just prefer XFX.

I have EF and XF.... works on 9.12hF drivers

10.2 is coming out today... which fixes all the problems .... 10.3 in March will have bezel management and many other resolved issues...

10.2 looks like it is going to be good. I have 1 more week before I can do any ordering. Lets see how it pans out!
 
Well built my system and bought a Diamond HD 5870 from microcenter just for the fact that they are local and close if a return was needed. loaded my os installed all of win 7 updates. loaded the 10.2 drivers without a problem!! everything is running great no crashes or freezes!

Friend of mine had been having issues as well with this card,but he installed different drivers and said it works great now.
 
I experienced GSODs on an XFX 5870 XT at stock frequencies on some games. I had to downclock the memory to be able to play.

XFX support is kind on answering, but it keeps going they are working with ATi to look into the problem. It's been weeks.

I don't know if suggest you on buying this card. It sure is powerfull, even with mem a bit downclocked the performance are pretty much the same even at 1920x1080 all maxed out.

But maybe if you'r lucky you are going to buy cards without this probably hardware issues anymore.
