I bought an HD 4870 right when they were released (sapphire version) and after a month or two the card died on me. After that I RMAed it and finally got my card back within about 3 weeks. Now after I got my card back I upgraded my system to use Windows Vista Ultimate X64 and have installed all the latest drivers and such for my system (8.10 cata). Anyways, onto the problem I am now having.
At random times when I am playing any game my system will basically crash on me. When this happens the image that was being displayed will stop and numerous little boxes all across the screen will appear with messed up images on them (a blurry brown image or what ever, just basically a corrupted image). If possibly I would like to know what the problem is. I have heard it might be power but I am a bit skeptical about that for it seemed to work with my other graphics cards. Now I think it might be a driver problem, for it seems that the graphics drivers would some times be recovered by vista after a problem, but now it seems that it won't. When my system crashes things such as music will continue playing although input will not be available, so I know Vista isn't completely crashing otherwise the sound should be jumbled, so I am kind of left out on the street with only a few clues. Does anyone know why this is happening? I can also say that I highly doubt overheating is any issue at all. I have a cooler master stacker 830 evolution with all 120mm fans in place. My case thus has monster airflow.
By the way, my system specs:
Phenom X4 9850 @ 3.0 GHz
MSI K9A2 Platinum
2 X 2GB Mushkin Cat 5 DDR2 800mhz
1 X 500 GB WD (storage)
2 X 250GB WD RAID 0 (windows is installed on a partition of this)
750W Rosewill Power supply
Sapphire HD 4870
