Well I've had a pair of Sennheiser HD-497's for 3-4 years now and I love the heck out of them, they are still in good shape sounding as good as ever, but I've been browsing around here and gosh darn it I would really like a new set of cans. The natural upgrade would probably be the 485's, which are 32-ohm mid-grade headphones. I don't have an amp, and probably don't have the cash to get one for awhile, and I'd really rather live without one because I already carry a lot around with me and I spend most of my headphone time while walking/riding public transit.
However, I have found a pair of HD-555's for really cheap, sixty bucks, and could probably talk the guy down a little lower. The catch is, the phones lived in a smoker's house, so they will smell. For the price, I think I could deal with this, and apparently you can use vinegar to get rid of the smell. Anyway, the headphones themselves have a significantly higher impedance so I'm wondering how well they'd perform on my Creative Zen Xtra - eventually to be upgraded to a Zen Vision: M.
I also use my headphones a lot with my computer for music, movies, and games, so soundstage is important - apparently the 555's shine in this respect.
What do you guys think?
