I am having a problem that i found to be common with the 4800 series. While playing a movie or simply idling, the screen goes black as if the connection was interupted. I can still control whatever apps were still running ( I know because itunes was running with music playing).

I have tried locking and unlocking the stock clocks. This should not be a heat issue because the highest temp achieved was in the mem and it was 45 C while stressing. The core ans shaders remain a few degrees less.

Help please
 
Please people, i hate having to restart my pc everyday or even twice a day. I t destroys ,my whole process.

I previously had nvidia but i think i properly removed all nv drivers.
 
I occasionally get this when my PC hibernates and when the system wakes up only the video card doesn't wake up until I unplug the video cable and plug it back in.
 
Don't think this is a "common" problem as you stated.

Have you tried playing around with power settings/disabling everything to do with blanking the screen? Does your monitor go into standby mode at all or does it just blank out? DVI or D-SUB connector? Are you using a DVI->D-SUB connector?

Try running driver cleaner just to be on the safe side if you haven't already. When it goes blank, have you tried unplugging the monitor and plugging it back in?
 
What's the rest of your setup?

I'm having something similar. Sometimes when I come out or into games my screen will go black. I can't even get my on screen monitor controls to be seen. My monitor doesn't power down, like in sleep, but the light stays on, but all I see is a black screen. Not even any back light can be seen. This is on my setup in my sig.

I did find that when I run my CPU overclock, the problem seems to be more frequent. Also, running my desktop at 59hz and games at 60hz seem to have fixed almost all the problems (same resolution 1920x1200). Though, it only happens when I go from 2d to 3d or vice-versa. Never just suddenly in the middle of 2d or 3d.
 
I tried fiddling with settings in CCC but nothing has prevented it for more than 12 hrs. I'm using the dvi - vga adapter plugged into the card and a vga-vga cable to my monitor.
 
maybe you should try to rma your card if everything else fails or try the card in another system and see if the same problem occurs

I see that you also have the P5B, maybe the asus drivers are at fault.
My monitor behaves similarly, screen is totally off but monitor is on (orange power light) as if in standby.

My cpu is barely oc'd just to fsb of 320, since i have 2 sets of different ram its not going further.

I've heard of this problem before when using dvi-vga adapters with certain video cards/monitors. I'll try and find the article and post it up. I can't remember if it had something to do with bad edid data being sent or whatever. Have you tried a different dvi-vga adapter? Do you have a monitor that supports DVI?

If all else fails I guess you could RMA the card and see if that helps.

This is my only monitor and the only connection is vga. But i can try another adapter.

I updated almost all of my mobo drivers (using driver max) and it been stable for 12 hrs.

Several times I got a 2-4 second blackout but that is much better than a complete one.

It really does sound like a physical connection somewhere is crapping out. If you have another adapter give it a shot. Haven't had any luck finding the article either :(
