HD 4770 review

I doubt I would use it for crossfire, since at the resolution you really need crossfire, you might of been be off buying a gtx 275 or a hd 4890, for a few bucks more, and less of a headache.

I'd like to know how much power the 4770 uses. My antec sp500 only has 25a on the 12v rail. This might be a good upgrade to my 8800gt and help me avoid upgrading the psu.

Rumored TDP is 80 watts, but it's not going to be a worthy upgrade from your 8800GT, definitely more of a sideways upgade, unless that's been giving you stability problems (the 8800GT uses more power than the HD4770).

This decent cooler will not be used for the Radeon HD 4770, as the above is nothing more than an image for AMD’s publicity compaign.

Lol...still a dual slot cooler though with a stranger looking fan.

Actually, if I want to run 8xAA, this is the advantage since the ati cards do not take much of a performance hit. Also, if the 4770 retails for $99, probably they will be available for $20 less shortly after launch.

I am curious on the Overclocking headroom, wouldn't be surprised if mem chips can hit 1100mhz, and the core might get near 900+ish.

I'm mainly interested in running one of these passive and not have it turn my case into an oven! Will probably pick one of these up for some light gaming action.

Seems like the article got pulled.

Google Cache version

(EDIT: ROFL, they only "pulled" the first page - the images and links in the article all work)

I like the power consumption numbers. Hope ATI drops a 4750 on us (compared to the 4770 numbers). That shouldn't need an external power connection, then. Win! I mean, the 4770 already stomps the 640-shader 4830 in every single test, and consumes a bunch less power under load...a 4750 should be the sweet spot!

I would get this over the 4830, however should be a bit before it is released though

i am curious how you guys manage to kill graphic card i owned many gc but none had died on me

I didn't kill it, just had an intermittent problem, would lose video output. Put an old 8300GS in and haven't had the problem so the 2600XT got RMA'ed. It's now discontinued so I'll have to get a new card.

140mm^2.. that's a tiny chip! For under $100, performance is excellent. Now developers can justify the extra time and money implementing features that really push high-end GPUs because even those with sub-$100 cards will be able to enjoy most of those features without the game turning into a slide show.

The 4770 is 20% faster than the 9800GT (8800GT) on average according to that review. Not insignificant, it might make the difference between playable and unplayable with a specific game and quality target. 8x AA is out of the question with these cards however unless you only play really old games.

The cooler looks really strange for a reference card. I'm surprised they aren't using the cooler from the 4830. Even the 4670 cooler might have been enough.

Well, my 2600XT died, it's this or a 4830. What would YOU get? Yes I'm on a budget.

The 4770 is a better card but that means waiting for a while before you can get a new videocard. If you're in desperate need of a new graphics card now, the 4830 isn't a bad buy either.

The HD4770 is showing up in google's shopping searcher now http://www.google.com/products?q=HD4770. Looks like the card will make a release tomorrow. I want to get one tomorrow, but I need one that blows air out the back not in the case -.-.

I don't know much about them really (never used one) but couldn't you just get one of those PCI slot cyclone style fans? Could add alot of noise I suppose and it is an added expense obviously but that might be one solution anyway.

Same here, but I'm hoping xfx hooks us up with one, even if we have to wait a few extra weeks for it. With the next gen possibly coming this summer, I'm hesitant to buy now anyway and hoping for some info in the mean time.

I am very interested in this card and have actually been waiting for it for at least a month. Even so I am still waffling. I will be upgrading from a 7900GS KO so whatever I get will be a pretty big step up but have 2 concerns about this 4770. First, I have heard some pretty negative opinions about ATI drivers and second, no matter how much research I do, I can't seem to get a good feel for how this 4770 will compare with its nvidia counterpart (say the GTS 250?) interms of real world power consumption and heat output.

Could any of you guys make an educated guess at how it might compare, in terms of power consumption and heat output, with the nearest nvidia competition? The 4770 will force the GTS 250 down in price I would think, correct?

Nvidia does not have an official card to compete with it. the gtx 250 is a bit faster, but has a higher price range, and this card even beats the 9800gt OC cards.

You might see gtx250 512mb drop to 110ish in comparision, but i doubt they would move too fast

Gonna wait for a price drop and a better cooler now I guess -.-. Maybe XFX will have a nice cooler and make it worth the extra 10.

If the look of the cooler matters that much.. what the hell does your computer chassis look like man? GPU right in front of your face?

I want one that blows air out the back personally.

Yeah and all of the reviewing tech sites received versions with that type of cooler. To bad no one is actually selling them yet. To my knowledge anyway.

Looks to be a decent card, those are some ugly heatsinks on newegg though o_o. Glad I bought my 4830 for 70$ and clocked it to 700/2000 couple months ago and didn't wait for this card.

From the [H] review of the 4770, I dont think it matters. It consumes so little power it probably isn't dumping that much heat into your case anyway. The 4890 probably dumps more heat into the case through the back of the PCB than the 4770 does for the entire card. :p

Looks like performance is just a hair under the HD4850.

So far the heat sinks and fans look poorly configured.

I'm sure these with decent cooling would do great in crossfire.

You can get that nice double slot cooler from XFX for 99.99 dollars plus shipping @ mwave. http://www.mwave.com/mwave/viewspec_v2.asp?scriteria=3005196

That looks like the one to get right now.

I am running 2 of the ugly types in my RIG in Xfire and they work great.

I think the XFX model may not be the best option for tight PCI Xfire mother boards.

Looking forward to some good reviews of the XFX model. I hope Xfire works well for it.

Just noticed a weakness with the design of of that cooler.

Looks like the GDDR5 RAM and the vREG don't have any heat sinks.

Still want to see some reviews.

I just got my XFX 4770 with the "Premium Cooler" I'm loving the card. I get about the same performance as my 8800 GTS 512 (was looking to replace it because I switched the computer into a smaller case). I'll try posting some overclocking and temps later tonight.

Sweet.

Please post some GPUZ screen shots of the temps.

Thanks.
