Hawk Attacks Quadcopter

Nice!

Had a couple close calls but never a direct attack, usually just very close circling.
 
That's some great video!

I guess it thought it was invading it's hunting grounds.
 
Watching the hawk's incredible flight control renews my respect for Nature. I wonder what it would take to give a quadrotor or plane that kind of precision control.
 
Reminds me of recently when I was walking my dog. I came across this brand new Acura that was parked in a driveway. You could hear this repeated "thwack!" every few seconds. I got closer and was amazed to see that it was a tiny bird, standing there on the driveway, apparently attacking it's reflection in the side of the car. The little fucker was relentless, and I have no doubt that it left it's mark on the car's paint job.

Had a similar thing happen with my own car before. A small bird was perching itself on the passenger window sill and would see it's reflection in the rear-view mirror and it was attacking the reflection. I got in the car and watched it continue the cycle over-and-over. Then I tapped on the glass and moved my car. No damage but the bird defecated all over the side of that door, so it must have been at it all day.
 
Fuck the copter, is the hawk ok? That looks like a bigger copter carrying a gopro, which means larger more powerfull motors. Those 4 motors/props could do some serious damage to a bird attacking from above....

Arent the blades designed to fly apart so that they dont break upon impact with anything?
 
Clearly something is wrong because they are not calling it a drone. What are they hiding? Everyone knows if it is small and flies its a drone.

No. My much smaller quad has his the cement with the spinning blades without breaking them. This thing could easily do SEVERE damage to your fingers, now imaging the much smaller hawks legs getting hit.

Ah yes, since hawks have had to evolve around quads for the last few hundred years right? How stupid of him to attack an object flying in his territory, knowing full well the damage it could do...... No that's not 'natures way'....
 
I hope the bird is ok. But yeah... I am sure those blades have left their mark on hawk's claws :(

Fucking with birds and insects is my only concern with flying machines of any sort. Sadly, drones are about to get mainstream almost overnight very soon.

All of this makes me very sad and it boils my blood.

I guess we should ban anything that can fly to save the birds :rolleyes:. How was the guy to know the hawk was going to attack his chopper? Stupid of him, he shoulda known that was the hawks territory and grounded his chopper immediately.

i was thinking a drone is semi autonoumous.. maybe more like a rc plane? Unless they are called that too.
 
Hawks! Hawk ate one of my parakeets before snatched it right off my dog in the backyard.
 
A pair of hawks made an RC club move their field to another part of the property in my area a few years back.

You should see the ones where the FPV gliders are attacked. The bird slowly gliding in and maintaining perfect formation reminds me of a jet coming in for a midair refueling.

If it's a Phantom, it's very likely flying in GPS mode. Which is basically always on semi auto since all your inputs are treated as 'requests' rather than commands and the CPU checks first if the user inputs are violating anything before very carefully moving in the direction you're pointing and restricting the inputs to keep the quad from flipping over. Even if you were to throw away the radio, the Phantom doesn't care since it was actually flying itself the entire time and it'll land by itself when the power runs low.

If we were to compare it to a car on a highway, it's like having a five year old wildly spinning the steering wheel. The onboard computer filtering it out and trying to figure out what the kid is trying to do and then doing a lane change instead of crashing into the sidewall.

The computer doesn't take over when you lose control, it was in control right from the start.
