Fixing a laptop for a friend. It was stuffed full of speed up my pc stuff. ended up running a full restore. windows 8.1 updated drivers chipset video storage touch. no problems. cant get windows update to work. Tried the trouble shooter, ran system file check, tried offline standalone updates. no dice.
It's good enough to give back and they will never know but it will bother me. Any ideas?

Fresh Install. It is the only way. Back up their data and then scan that data for nasties.

did fresh install from its backup image. full wipe. can i still do 10 free somehow?

Yea, there is a thread or 3 around here about...if only search worked.

Download the Windows 10 Media Creation tool and run it from there, that should work. If not, create the media on a usb drive and do a boot from there instead.

have you tried clearing the update files?

open an admin command prompt
run: net stop wuauserv
delete folder: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution
run: net start wuauserv
try updating again.

or install 10 and use the 8.1 key to activate it.
