Like the title says i am having trouble getting the data back.

long story short, i had setup a Amahi server for my parents out of an old HP workstation, overkill for there needs, they almost use nothing of its features other then file server. well they had a really bad power outage that started with a surge, i had been planing to put their server on an UPS but had not gotten around to doing it, end results, on board sata controller fried and one dead HDD, luckily no data was on the one HDD.

Now im an just going to use an over the counter NAS for them but first i need to get the Data off the last two HDD. I had not used raid but Grayhole implemented with Amahi. now from my understanding it did not strip data but distributed it around on the 3 HDD so i thought i could just load up a Live CD of ubuntu and copy the data over (formatted in EXT4 so cant use windows), well i can see the data no prob but now im getting input/output errors when i try to move the data to a NTSC formatted external HDD.

I need help quickly as the data is irreplaceable (family photos, over 300GB of them :( and ripped movies), there is about 1TB in data overall. im am not a *nix noob but i am not fluent in Command Line, still learning.

Thanks

Look into systemrescue CD. Specifically ddrescue located on it. It does an image copy of drives, but keeps a log of bad read blocks, so it can retry the bad blocks over again.

This is NOT a file level copy, but a bit-for-bit copy.

i will try that as i do have one 1TB HDD with me that is not full of data. i hope it works as i need to get this data so i can start moving it over to the new location.

Thanks.
