Well I was swapping out my CPU's today thinking it would be really routine, but after looking at the condition of the thermal tape on both heatsinks and residue on processors I decided to clean it all up and put some artic silver 5 on them.

I run P4's 2.4 and a 2.8 with stock heatsinks and fans. I followed the application instructions to a T. If anything I may have got a hair more compound.

I booted the PC up and it went from 27 idle to 35 idle fairly quickly. Then after about 20 minutes dropped down to 29 idle. I thought great thats a little lower than my usual 32 idle.

So I booted up a processor heavy game and it skyrocketed and peaked at 48c and this was only 60% cpu usage.

What went wrong here? I know that it takes up to 200 hours for the compound to really settle in and do it's just right, but it shouldn't be THIS bad at first should it?

My normal temp for 60% cpu is around 40c :(

Well I tried it out at 100% load and its the same at 50% load, it just caps at 49c.

Also as soon as theres a lot of processing going on the temp jumps up VERY fast. like from 30c to 49c in a minute or two.

how exactly did you clean the old compound?

that and higher temps are normal at first, AS5 needs to burn in, basically the metallic particles settle and the closer together the better the thermal transfer gets.

Sounds like you either have not cleaned old compound correct or that HSF is not seated right.

I first scraped it off with a credit card, and then used a lint free rag and rubbing alcohol.

There was no way I could get all the residue off, it just wouldn't come off after scrubbing and scrubbing.

Maybe I should use a toothbrush and some goof off. I'm gonna keep it how it is for now cause i'm too lazy really to crack my case back open heh.

Well I decided to give it another go, bought some goof-off and used a toothbrush and got the processor and the heatsink sparkling clean, no residue whatsoever. Then washed it down with rubbing alchohol.

I then put a tad less arctic silver because I had put too much on last time. My temperatures are the SAME!!!

What gives? 30 idle 49c load on a 2.8c just doesn't seem healthy. Never seen that kind of range before, idle temps are really decent.
