Having an argument about gaming Resolutions

What difference is there between 1600x1200 and 1024x768?
I'm saying that 1600 is better, because I read in an xbit-labs article that it was the optimum resolution for gaming.. but why? What makes it better?
 
Its higher... Sharper image quality... as for being the optimal resolution... I always thought 1024x768 was, it seemed to always offer the best balance between IQ and Performance.

Of course that depends on your hardware
 
Optimum resolution depends on the size of your display. 1600x1200 gaming on my 22in monitor would be sweet, but isn't needed on a 15in tube. Of course i would prefer 2048x1536 (my monitors max res) over 1600x1200 if I could maintain 60fps and get 8x FSAA and 16x AF :D .

I need specific reasons why it;s better though. Basically this guy is saying it's pointless beyond a res, and he's asying 1024x768

The higher the resolution, the sharper the image quality, and the less AA + AF you have to use to get good IQ.

If your monitor can't support at least 75Hz at 1600x1200 though, i wouldn't run it. My Mitsubishi DP930SB supports up to 88Hz at 1600x1200.
