Having a bit of a problem with a new processor

I just received a new 2.8E processor (bought it over eBay) to replace my 2.4B. The pins are all good, and I installed it fine (no problems), but once everything is connected and I boot up, the computer doesn't POST even though the hard drive is spinning and all the fans work. I updated the BIOS to the most recent version.

Setup is as such:
SOYO SY-P4I865PE Plus DRAGON 2 v1.0 (Prescott-Ready)
Pentium 4 2.8gHz Prescott
512mb PC2700 DDR

If anyone could help me out I'd be greatful.

Also, is there any way to tell if a proc is burnt out/broken?

is your 2.4 a prescott? i wasnt aware they made one but i havent been following that closely

try clearing the bios, see if that helps

it could be that that mobo just cant handle the increased power requirements of the Prescott though I dont know for sure

It says the max Vcore is 1.6, but on the Prescott the voltage is supposed to be between 1.25 and 1.40.

I've cleared the bios many times, flashed it with the newest version from Soyo, and no luck.

test the cpu in another system. since you bought it used (ebay) then it could be a dead proc. Also, I am not totally sure about this, but don't you need PC3200 ram to run the prescott?

Volts is not power.

Prescotts use less voltage, but more power.. (amps well watts technically)

But if your MB is Prescott ready, it should be able to handle it.

Check if anything is shorting out the motherboard. I had the same problem and it turned out that the heatsink i was using was shorting out my system and it would keep it from posting. Check the underside and see if everything is mounted correctly to the case. Also pull components slowly to see if they are having conflicts i.e ram, sound, hdds.

hope this helps because i know how it feels :(

edit: Its virtually impossible to check if the cpu is burnt out because I had a burnt out chip and there was no physical damage(or smell). Even when I returned it to frys they saw no damage and tested it and sure enough it was dead. So try it on another mobo or take it to a computer shop to test it.

Call Soyo

there are known problems with Soyo boards and prescotts

they use a cheap 3 phase power solution but there was also some bios compatiblity issues a few months back that they were taking there time fixing

also you will want to get pc3200 ram (although it will work without it with a 3:2 divider)

Dariob: I have an older intel 845 chipset motherboard, but it didn't work with that. I'm not completely suprised as that mobo doesn't support prescott, but I thought I'd try anyways. And prescott can use DDR at 400/333/266 mhz, so DDR2700 is fine.

Ollin: I doubt anything is shorting as my current processor works fine yet the new one doesn't. The way I install the heatsink is exactly the same, so if it were to short out the prescott it would short out the northwood as well.

BigTaf: Their website (www.soyousa.com) advertises the board as "Prescott-Ready" and can take the components that I'm using, so I'm a bit confused. I'll try e-mailing them though.

If it were dead, where would I be able to take it to find that out? Note that there aren't any Fry's here (east coast)

Thanks for the help so far
