Is there a pc version of this? Is there a way to order only a case from apple?

Is it a unique formfactor for a mb, ie any consumer purchaseable mbs that would fit properly?
 
No, there isn't a PC version of the G5 case.

They are truly wonderful cases though and worth the hassle to track down.
I got mine from the classifieds and they show up on eBay from time to time- be aware, they are hideously expensive from Apple and not exactly cheap elsewhere. Expect to pay upwards of $200 for a bare one.

Mr. Bean's worklog will show you what it takes to make a PC conversion.
 
The closest thing you might ever get to that case in the official "pc" realm would be a Lian Li or Silverstone.. they utilize a similar setup inside, but none really look like it that much on the outside.

However, I think this case is new. As in, brandnew, as of today. It is supposed to be the replacement to the G5.

It has something like 8 memory slots, 3 (double wide) pcie slots, & 2x dual core xeons.

Since it uses intel hardware, I was hoping someone might have information on if the case would still need to be heavily modded to build a pc from the ground up around it with significantly less case modifiying.

its the exact same case, except for the addition of one more optical drive bay and i think another USB port on the front or somethin ;)
 
This case IS new.

This is the case that is new for the Intel-Based Mac Pro. Basically the G5's replacement. Aside from a 2nd optical bay, it will be pretty much the same visually on the outside, but will be COMPLETELY different on the inside. Once their website dehoses, you can go to www.apple.com/macpro and click on the Gallery icon to see more pictures. There WILL eventually be bare cases released through service channels, as has been the case in the past (no pun intended), but expect it to take some time, and be expensive when it does.

Aside from that, there is currently NOTHING in the PC realm that even approaches this design in similarity save having some holes drilled into it (not that I am an Apple zealot or a LiLi hater, just stating facts).

From looking at the pics in Apple's gallery, it will require SIGNIFICANTLY less modification than previous G5 style case interiors, but do not expect it to be a cakewalk.

I think you're looking at a complete and functional unit here.
It's the beauty- and bane- of the Mac experience...the hardware is incredibly well integrated and assembled but also incredibly proprietary and unique.
No swapping out for the latest/greatest/coolest PSU with this baby, no sirree- nothing else would fit.

Besides, there are an awful lot of covers/modules in this thing- lots of opportunities for concealing the ugly undersides of components.
 
Yeah, I saw one in Fry's the other day running, and it looked just like that picture. No wires to be seen.

QFT. Apple is more anal about wire management than anyone here (and that is saying a lot). And since they can design their case to include wiring channeled directly into the chassis, you just don't see any wires in their current machines. The most you can see when opening the thing up (at least for the G4's and G5's is an inch or two next to the HDD or optical drive. And to even see that much you have to take a cover off.
