What kind of temps do you guys get doing it "the new way" vs, say, using an x-acto knife to spread a hair-thin layer?
 
I recently replaced the coolers on my two PCs, and I used the instructions on that page to apply the as5.

Unfortunatly I'm not into overclocking, I'm more into low noise, so I don't watch temps that closely, but I can say that on both systems (a socketA which now runs a si-97, and an a64 running an xp-120) I was very suprised by the drop in temps compared to the Zalman stuff given that there wasn't any more airflow in play

It's difficult to say how much can be attributed to the coolers and how much to the as5 applied the "new way", but thinking about it, it does make sense that the "pre-apply and clean" and "squish from the middle" techniques, would be much better for providing neater mate, minimising the potential for actually trapping air in surface imperfections that you'd inevitably get with flat application.

Presumably though, the worse the mating surfaces, the more benefit you'd get from the new technique, on lapped/smooth surfaces I don't see how the difference could be much more than marginal.
