I currently have a x800xt AGP that i can exchange. I wanna stay with AGP because I currently dont have an SLi Mobo and i cant afford it right now. i got my card from newegg so im gonna exchange it with them for another. But i just cant decide what to get..nvidia ati? im exchanging the x800xt because i wasnt happy with its performance (under 30fps on the f.e.a.r demo constantly)and for $300 i want my moneys worth. What would you guys get?

honestly, its hard to recommend an agp card for $300 when for not much more you can get the 7800GT. you are gonna have to upgrade eventually! why not do it while you have the quick 300 to throw at it. :) you could always go with the GTO2 for 200 and add a mobo for another 100. i hear the GTO2 does some nice things unlocking and overclocking.

anyone else have a ati aiw x800xt 256mb agp and not happy with it?.. maybe f.e.a.r is just too much.

Trade in vid card. Get mid range a8n-sli type of motherboard. That's roughly 140.00. Get a OC 6600GT PCIe roughly 160.00. Use www.froogle.com to find the best deal on both. Later throw in a 2nd 6600GT and SLi those babies. That should get you almost double the performance that the x800 got you in fear and definitely more than that in Open GL games like Quake 4 and call of duty 2. This would be roughly an even exchange Not to mention your now back in sync with technology and have alot of upgrading options.

Just some food for thought

May seem like a stupid question but, is there possibly another reason why your performance isn't that great? I mean you system looks top of the line, maybe its software?

I dunno what resolution you're running at but my card did great at 1280x1024 (thats the native res on my screen) with 4x antialiasing and 2x anistropic filtering.

Just a shot in the dark.

man i should have made a thread here about building a new pc. i went with an agp board because i was fimiliar with it. sli is so new and i didnt really know how good it was. seemed at first like everything that used it was just a bunch of OCers. ill have to think about it today.

X800XT is about as good as it gets on AGP :( If you run mostly OpenGL games, you may get better performance with a 6800GT/Ultra, but it won't be much faster than an X800XT, probably at most one resolution step. If a 6800Ultra doesn't get it done for you, you have basically no choice but to move to PCI Express.

I have an x800xt pe agp and F.E.A.R. puts a hurting on it. That being said, I get alright performance with everything turned up @ 1280x768 w/ 2xAA. Even better w/ no AA. I think another gig of RAM would help your performance in that game more than a new video card (especially if you are gonna be limited by what is available in agp). The only time I really struggle is when my system pages because I only have 1gb of ram - everything comes to a stuttering halt for a couple seconds. According to what I've read, 2gb smooths this game out big time.

looks like im goin with this

Leadtek Geforce 6800 PX6800TDH Video Card

GIGABYTE GA-K8N Pro-SLI Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard

sooner or later ill try to get another Leadtek Geforce 6800 PX6800TDH Video Card.. but that will take some time. hows that look anyway?

SLI potential is nice and a PCIe board is more "future proof." If performance in F.E.A.R. is what you are shooting for, though, going from an x800xt to a vanilla 6800 is a step backwards.

soooo a stronger sli vid card is needed huh.. hmm.. what would you recommend? what single SLI card could top an x800's performance?

6800GT would be about on par. the 7800GT is the best deal going, but requires about 100 more than the 300 you have (300 for the card, 100 for the board). i would suggest to just wait and get that extra 100 then go for the 7800GT.

qbert, from what you're saying it sounds like you might not know this, so.. a "sli card" just means an nvidia video card. all nvidia pci-e cards are sli enabled i think.

imo, though, sli is pointless unless you're going to buy two of the top of the line cards or the one in that generation right underneath (like 2 gtx's or 2 gt's) at once. if you wait until the next generation to add another card, at the rate things have progressed for the past 2 generations, adding another card will only give u the same amount of performance boost as just getting the new card, and it'll cost about the same anyways because you can sell off your previous card. but things are going to either slow down like the cpu market after a while, or there's going to be some major breakthrough in the architecture and stuff that just blows away everything else. if its the latter, then sli doesn't matter; if its the former, then it will. same for crossfire when it comes out, too. just my 2 cents :p

if you are unsatisfied with the x800xt performance you need to upgrade to pci-express, period. A pci-express 7800GT would likely satisfy you very much.

that being said, the FEAR final version will run much faster than the demo.

I think the only cards that can significantly outperform the x800xt would be something from the 7800 or x1800 series. The x850 and the platinum editions are techincally faster, and the 6800 ultra is faster in some instances, but it won't be a significant or even noticeable difference with any of those cards.

If you are going to upgrade and expect a real gaming improvement, you are going to be forced to PCIe and the 7800 or x1800 series cards. The 7800GT would probably be your cheapest option, in this case, and would play F.E.A.R. really well. Merely switching to PCIe wont make a difference unless you buy a faster card, and if you dont switch to PCIe there aren't any faster cards available for agp.

I agree with the people who reccommend saving another $100 and going for the 7800GT, anything less would be pointless. My earlier suggestion of just adding another gig of RAM to your current system would be a lot cheaper (the x800xt is still pretty quick, after all).
