I've been getting ready for my New PC gear in the mail. So i've been cleaning out the old PC case and what not. When i noticed the sticker on my Antec True Blue 500watt PSU was coming up........ I found another sticker under it. Only to find out that Its not a Antec True Blue but a Sparkle Power 400 watt. It might explain some pc problems i've been having the two years since i built it.

Ok so tell me this is 400 watts enough for the following:

Old System:
DVD-ROM
CD-RW
Floppy
2 HDDs
GF4 Ti 4600 (now ATI 9600xt)
1gb of DDR 266 (PC 2100)
Audigy Platinum
AMD Xp 2000+
5 12volt fans

something tells me that what i just bought wont run with this psu. Even though its set for 12volt and all that good stuff.

New pc:

AMD 64 3200+
and the same stuff as above.

Oh and i will say i just cut myself with this PSU one of the molex's broke and cut through my nails and its bleeding. What poorly made connectors.

So do you thinkl i should get a new PSU? If so what would be the best? Also this as a fan on the bottom of it but lays on the bottom of the case (its a server case) could that be a problems with air flow or something?

First off, welcome to the forums :) .

Where did you purchase that psu? If it was online you should post the name so nobody buys from there again.

Lemme get this straight; you bought the psu as a Antec TruBlue 500w (which doesn't exist btw), and under the sticker there's a sparkle sticker? That really sux.....

But here's the good news. Sparkle is made by the same people that make Fortron supplies, the FPS Group, and while the fit and finish on their supplies can be lacking (as per the broken connector lol) the insides of their supplies are known to be excellent. Depending on which 400w sparkle it is, it should run your system, since your video card isn't a power hog or anything. The important thing is amps. Does it list the amps on each line on the sticker? Can you find a link to it on Newegg.com or online somewhere?

While it should run your machine, you're not going to have an outstanding amount of headroom left. If you have some extra cash, you may want to take a look at my sticky on the top of the forums for some other psu choices. So you don't need to replace it, but if the connectors are breaking and you're not happy with it in general (plus, maybe its not even a sparkle, it could be a generic with a sparkle sticker if they slapped an antec label on...), a new psu would do you well. It's your choice!

I kind of feel bad about all of this. I bought the PSU OEM style from PC-Club a place i thought was a good local PC parts store at the time. The sticker did seem to be a little fake to me also but they told me it was great and all that bs to get me to buy it. And well i did.

I cant read the numbers very well on the sticker but i can give the Model number for the sparkle PSU no problems.

Well i'm posting from the semi new computer. And it seems to run very well. I actually was over by 50watts with my previous chip than with this one. I'm actually 100watts under which is just amazing.

None the less thanks for all the help. Does DDR 400 take up more power than DDR 266?
 
the real issue is which rail the mobo uses to primarily power the onboard components
(CPU, RAM, AGP, Chipset, Cards)
which has recemtly changed from the +5V to the +12V

hense my concern
still under construction but review > Watts dont mean Jack

does the mobo have a 4 pin or 6 pin connector for auxillary power?
could you list the components your powering?
