giga-byte 7vaxp motherboard
amd 2200+ @ default speed
512MB PC3200 RAM
radeon 9000 128MB

when i goto start my computer, the heatsink and system fan start to spin then stop. i though it could have been my psu but after i put it in another computer and it worked i ruled that out. then i tired my ram, that dident seem to be the problem. the hd would turn on when i jumped the psu and dident have the ide cabled plugged in it. i took the battery off the motherboard and let it sit overnight, that dident do anything. i dont think its the motherboard as theres a led that comes on saying dont play with the ram. i removed the heatsink, fan and cpu. cleaned them, reapplied thermal paste and reinstalled them. still dosent work. the system was running bare the whole time, only a graphics card and hdd connected. i dont have another graphics card, but i dont think that is the problem. does is sound like i have a dead cpu, or is this fixable some other way?

Whats POST? I know some stuff about computer, alot more then the average person, but theres also alot of stuff I dont know.

I dont belive it even gets to POST as the computer makes no sounds at all. But then again, Im not to sure what POST is.

even though your psu worked in the other computer maybe it is too weak for that one.

or else there is a problem with the motherboard.

if the cpu is dead the fan and hard drive would still start up.

I thought if the cpu was dead it wouldn't do jack?

cpu dead doesn't mean the mobo's dead....
it'll run.. just won't POST(the screen where detecting hdd, coutning RAM etc.)... plus few BEEPS

sure you're not noob to pcS?

sorry I thought you meant post.. duh.. sleep depo

Dude, the only way to know for sure if the CPU is dead is to either try it in someone elses computer or try another CPU in yours.

To me it doesnt sound like its a CPU problem, more a PSU or motherboard issue...try running the system outside of the case, the fact that it starts then shuts off may suggest there is a short circuit going on somewhere.

report back and we will see what else we can suggest...tho on 1st impressions it does sound to me like the PSU is not powerful enuff or the mobo is dying/dead.

It sounds to me like your getting a short somewhere along your PSU track. Probably sounds pretty stupid, but thats exactly what happens in these cases. Its almost like the pc starts up for 1 sec, then shuts down.

Maybe your settings are wrong for your CPU. Does the motherboard have a jumper that allows you to set your FSB speed? Your CPU could be installed incorrectly. I've also seen a PC act this way when the heat sink is installed improperly. As the other poster stated, there might also be a short somewhere. You can try reseating your mobo. Maybe you accidentally placed a jumper on a fan header.

If the law of averages holds up, I'd say that your motherboard is the culprit, as 2 out of the 3 - 7vax boards I've owned are dead.

From much experience, I'll say it sounds like the motherboard.

Pull your CPU and either test in someone else's computer, or take it to a computer shop and have it tested (should be cheap). If the CPU is good, then it's time for a new motherboard.

we just had this problem at school, its probably your power supply i recommend getting a new one or a differnt one, that was the problem here and you had the same symptoms

Thanks for all the suggestions, Ill try another PSU and running the computer out of the box to see if its just being shorted somewhere. If those dont work Ill have to find a friend with a amd box. Thanks again.

I tired a different PSU while running it out of the case and that dident work. the last think i can try is the CPU in a different mobo, i just need to find a friend with a athlon xp board that will risk me breaking their mobo.
