I know that LGA 2011-3 will support DDR4, but is anyone willing to speculate as to what sort of RAM capacity I could expect with the motherboards coming out next year?

I have no idea whether this will be determined by the X99 chipset or the DDR4 memory controller, but I'm curious whether those boards will support 128GB of RAM.

Don't worry, I still love you guys. :)

I probably brain-farted when I posted this is the Motherboards forum anyways, so might I have this thread moved to Memory or deleted?

Thank you!

It will be determined by the memory controller. Remember DDR4 has one stick per channel, not two sticks like DDR3. Assuming DDR4 launches with up to 16gb sticks, the maximum official support will be 64gb. If it's 32gb, then it will most likely be 128gb, but I doubt we will see 32gb sticks for consumers on launch. You cannot officially validate something that doesn't exist.

I didn't realize that DDR4 will only support one stick per channel. I guess it will at least serve to free up some space on the motherboard.

It's always fun to speculate, I suppose. I'm trying to decide whether it would be worthwhile to wait for LGA 2011-3 boards to release, and I wanted to see what some of the more experienced PC guys were maybe anticipating with the release.

I have a feeling support on high end boards will be around 128gb or minimum 64gb, I need a ramdisk drive baby!

DDR4 has an option for switched memory banks (which would allow more dimm slots) however I highly doubt we will see that in non server boards meaning all boards will have the same 4 slot limit.
