I have a casual gamer friend who needs to upgrade off his GF4MX on a college student budget. I've been dealing mostly with ATI over the last 2-3years but for the price range the 6600GT looks fast, faster than even my 9700PRO and has PS3.0 and cheap, around $150. Looks about what I think he needs.

Only thing holding me back is the screenshots I saw, especially in Farry where the tiles were blocky and distorted such as here http://www.hardocp.com/image.html?image=MTA5NDE1OTY3NjNLZHRoZ24wVjdfNF82X2wuanBn. I always thought it was funny that Farcry was one of nVidia's games that taughted SM3.0 but also had image quality issues.

I've clicked through several newer review but they seem to have stopped benching Farcry :(

Pretty old, I believe there was a banding issue as well in that article. I believe it was fixed a long time ago.. go ahead and buy the card :)

Personally I think the 6600gt has great image quality and for a college student on a budget it would be great best midgrade video card out there. That is until the 7600 series comes out.

At the time of the GeForce 6 series ATI was the only one left lying and cheaping about image quality and the switches you can flip in the drivers (see Tom's).

You do have "optimizations" by default but flipping the switch to turn them off in the driver actually makes the card do the full loop.

I always thought that shot was weird. I only have an FX and all the time i've been playing since FC was released, that's never happened to me.

You could finde th older pics but not the newer ones at [H]ardOCP  FarCry Patch 1.3 & SM 3.0

You may remember a certain screenshot we have shown in past reviews that shows artifacts being rendered on blue tile. Well, we may no longer have to show you this screenshot because the problem has been fixed with Patch 1.3!
